Political Parties In Vanuatu
This article lists political parties in Vanuatu. Vanuatu has a multi-party system with numerous political parties, in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. Not all parties have a consistent ideology, and of those that do not, most members tend to support the political positions/attitudes of the party leader. Prior to 2024, politicians switching parties several times over the span of a few years was not uncommon. Governments typically comprise coalitions of numerous small parties which change regularly, with parties and MPs "crossing the floor" (although the latter of which was prohibited in 2024), and Prime Ministers being ousted in motions of no confidence has previously occurred several times in one legislative term. Vanuatu ( or ; ), officially the Republic of Vanuatu (; ), is an island country in Melanesia located in the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago, which is of volcanic origin, is east of northern Australia, northeast of New Caledonia, east of New Guinea, southeast of Solomon Islands, and west of Fiji. Vanuatu was first inhabited by Melanesians, Melanesian people. People's Progressive Party (Vanuatu)
The People's Progressive Party is a reformist political party in Vanuatu. At the 6 July 2004 legislative elections, the party won 3 out of 52 seats. The following election saw its seat count increased to 4. Its leader, Sato Kilman served as Deputy Prime Minister and foreign minister of Vanuatu from December 2004 to July 2007. He had made the party an important member of the National United Party-led coalition of Prime Minister Ham Lini but in July 2007, apparently due to corruption charges put against Kilman's secretary, Lini expelled the People's Progress Party from the cabinet. Kilman formed his first legal cabinet in June 2011 and his government was reflected in 2012, with PPP winning six seats. The party was forced into opposition in 2013 when Kilman resigned and Moana Carcasses became prime minister. The Vanuatu National Development Party (VNDP) is a political party in Vanuatu. History The VNDP was formed by Christophe Emelee (an MP for the Vanuatu National Party) and Robert Bohn (leader of the Vanuatu Peoples Development Party) in 2014. The Vanuatu Labour Party (; ) is a political party in Vanuatu. The party was established on 3 June 1987. It was founded on the initiative of various trade union organizations in order to contest the 1987 Vanuatuan general election, 1987 parliamentary election. The proposal to found the party was first presented by Ephraim Kalsakau, a leader of the Vanuatu Municipal Workers Union. In the 1987 polls, it presented four candidates; George Kalsakau in Port Vila, Willy Romain in Tanna (island), Tanna, Thomas Reynold in Luganville and Kenneth Satungia of Efate. All four candidates were trade union leaders. The Vanua'aku Pati () is a democratic socialist political party in Vanuatu. History The party was founded on 17 August 1971 by Walter Lini as the New Hebridean Cultural Association, renamed later that same year as the New Hebrides National Party. It was one of two parties formed during the country's move towards independence. While the NHNP was supported by British interests, the Union of New Hebrides Communities was supported by French interests. The NHNP went on to win the 1975 elections. In 1977, it was renamed the Vanua'aku Pati. The party won the pre-independence 1979 elections and Lini became chief minister.
