2023 Gabonese Coup D'état
On 30 August 2023, a coup d'état occurred in Gabon shortly after the announcement that incumbent president Ali Bongo had won the general election held on 26 August. It was the eighth successful coup to occur in West and Central Africa since 2020. The coup's leader Brice Oligui Nguema is part of the Bongo family and overthrew his cousin Ali Bongo. The coup brought an end to the 56-year-long rule of the father-and-son duo Omar and Ali Bongo over Gabon. It has been described by some as a palace coup. Background Since independence from France in 1960, Gabon has primarily been ruled by the Bongo family starting with President Omar Bongo in 1967 and, following his death in 2009, by his son Ali Bongo Ondimba. Ali Bongo was re-elected in an election in 2016 which prompted a failed coup attempt in 2019. The Social Democratic Party (, PSD) is a political party in Gabon. It is part of the Presidential Majority coalition and is led by Pierre Claver Maganga Moussavou. History The PSD was established in 1991. Maganga Moussavou was nominated as its candidate for the 1993 presidential election, finishing fourth in a field of thirteen candidates with 3.6% of the vote. He ran again in the 1998 presidential election, this time finishing fifth out of the eight candidates with 1% of the vote. The Gabonese Progress Party (, PGP) is a political party in Gabon. History The PGP was established as a left-leaning party in March 1990, at the beginning of the wave of democratization that swept Africa in the early 1990s. Initially, its key leaders were Pierre-Louis Agondjo Okawé, who was President, Marc Saturnin Nan Nguema, who was Vice-President, and Joseph Rendjambe, who was Secretary-General.David E. New Democracy, or the New Democratic Revolution, is a type of democracy in Marxism, based on Mao Zedong's Bloc of Four Social Classes theory in post-revolutionary China which argued originally that democracy in China would take a path that was decisively distinct from that in any other country. He also said every colonial or semi-colonial country would have its own unique path to democracy, given that particular country's own social and material conditions.
