Philadelphia Sphas
The Philadelphia Sphas, also stylized SPHAs or SPHAS, were an American basketball franchise that existed as a professional, semi-professional, and exhibition team. They played their home games in the ballroom of Philadelphia's Broadwood Hotel. The team's name is an acronym, derived from South Philadelphia Hebrew Association (the group that initially funded the team), and the team's players, at least in its earlier years, were primarily Jewish. Future Philadelphia Warriors owner Eddie Gottlieb founded the team as an amateur group shortly after he and some close friends graduated from high school, and it later became a professional team. The Sphas played in many leagues around the Philadelphia area and the East Coast, most notably the Eastern Basketball League and the American Basketball League (1925–55), American Basketball League (ABL), between which the Sphas won 10 championships. Broadwood Hotel
The Philadelphia Lodge No. 2 BPOE, also known as the Philadelphia Athletic Club, was a historic American Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) lodge that occupied 306-320 North Broad Street (Philadelphia), Broad Street in the Logan Square, Philadelphia, Logan Square neighborhood of Center City, Philadelphia, Center City Philadelphia. History and notable features This lodge, built between 1922 and 1925, was a thirteen-story building. The BPOE moved into the new lodge from the four-story building located at 1320–1322 Arch Street, built between 1904 and 1906, and designed by Francis Caldwell and Edward Simon, that still stands. The Elks occupied the bottom five floors, with residential/hotel accommodations in the higher eight floors. The lower floors included meeting rooms, restaurants, ballrooms, and auditoria.
