Oxford United Football Club () is a professional association football, football club based in Oxford, England. The club compete in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football league system, English football. Founded as Headington Football Club in 1893, the club adopted its current name in 1960. Nicknamed The U's, it has played its home games at the Kassam Stadium, replacing its former home of Manor Ground (Oxford), Manor Ground in 2001. The club joined the the Football League, Football League in 1962 after winning the Southern Football League, reaching the Football League Second Division, Second Division in 1968. Kassam Stadium
The Kassam Stadium (also known as Grenoble Road) is the home of Oxford United F.C., and is named after the ground's owner and former chairman of the football club, Firoz Kassam. The Kassam Stadium was built whilst Oxford United played in Division Two (third tier); however, Oxford were relegated to Division Three (fourth tier) the season before the new stadium was built and were further relegated to the Conference National (fifth tier) in 2005–06. The club was previously based at The Manor Ground from 1925 until the opening of the Kassam Stadium in 2001. Manor Ground, Oxford
The Manor Ground was a football stadium in Oxford, England, the home of Oxford United (previously known as Headington United) between 1925 and 2001. It hosted United's record crowd of 22,750 against Preston North End in an FA Cup 6th Round match on 29 February 1964. The main seating stand was the Beech Road stand (on the west), the 'home' terracing was the London Road stand (south), the 'away' terracing was Cuckoo Lane (north) and on the fourth side was the Osler Road stand (east). In 1966, with the demolition of Sandfield Cottage, a new entrance to the ground was created onto London Road. With the advent of the 1990s and the Taylor Report, the Manor Ground's terracing was rapidly becoming antiquated, and it gained a reputation amongst fans as one of the more dilapidated stadiums in English professional football. St Andrew's Church, Headington
St Andrew's Church, Headington is a Church of England parish church in the village of Old Headington, Oxfordshire, England, now absorbed as part of the suburb of Headington in the city of Oxford. The church building is located in St Andrew's Road. It is a Grade II* listed building. History The church was built c.1160 in the Norman style. A south aisle and tower were added in the 13th century. In 1862, J. C. Buckler lengthened the nave. Present day The parish stood in the Traditional Catholic tradition of the Church of England. The parish had passed Resolutions A and B in 2010 to show that it rejected the ordination of women. , however, the Revd Jennifer Strawbridge is listed as "assisting clergy" on the church's website. It takes its name from A420 road, a primary road between both cities, which are only 30 miles (48 km) apart. Graham Atkinson
Graham Atkinson (17 May 1943 – 5 January 2017) was an English footballer. He was a stalwart at Oxford United in their initial years in the Football League (1962–1974). His brother is Ron Atkinson. Playing career Graham Atkinson was born in Liverpool four years after his brother Ron Atkinson and joined Aston Villa's groundstaff at the age of 15 but, like his brother Ron, failed to make the first team. He was released for the occasional game for Headington United (the team later to become Oxford United) during 1959–60 and before reaching his 17th birthday (when he could have signed full-time for Aston Villa), he signed for the Southern Leaguers. He developed in the Reserves during his first season, but came to the fore at inside-right in the second of the two successive championship years (1961–62). John Shuker
John Shuker (8 May 1942 – 29 December 2019) was an English professional footballer, notable for holding the club record of league appearances for Oxford United. He was with the club on their election to the Football League in 1962 and over the next 15 years played 478 times in the Second, Third and Fourth Divisions. Shuker was born in Eccles, Greater Manchester. He joined Oxford in 1961, originally playing as a winger. He made his debut in August 1962 and went on to captain the side, playing in a variety of positions.
