Onslow, Western Australia
Onslow is a coastal town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, north of Perth. It had a population of 829 people as at 2021 and is located within the Shire of Ashburton local government area. The town is served by Onslow Airport, and is located 76 km off of the North West Coastal Highway. History Onslow was gazetted on 26 October 1885 as a town to serve the port at Ashburton Roads, at the mouth of the Ashburton River, exporting wool from sheep stations of the Pilbara hinterland. It was named after the Chief Justice of Western Australia, Alexander Onslow. Wool continued to be the major industry for the next 80 years, despite the extremes of drought and flood that characterize the region and are related to the passage or absence of cyclones. HMS Onslow (G17)
HMS ''Onslow'' was an O-class destroyer of the Royal Navy. The O-class were intermediate destroyers, designed before the outbreak of the Second World War to meet the likely demands for a large number of destroyers. They had a main gun armament of four 4.7 in (120 mm) guns, and had a design speed of . ''Onslow'' was ordered on 2 October 1939 and was built by John Brown & Company at their Clydebank, Glasgow shipyard, launching on 31 March 1941 and completing on 8 October 1941. ''Onslow'' served with the Home Fleet during the war, with a major activity being escorting Arctic Convoys to the Soviet Union. She sank the German submarine in September 1942 and in December that year took part in the Battle of the Barents Sea in 1942, while escorting Convoy JW 51B to Russia. ''Keeping Up Appearances'' is a British sitcom created and written by Roy Clarke. It originally aired on BBC1 from 1990 to 1995. The central character is an eccentric and snobbish middle-class social climber, Hyacinth Bucket (Patricia Routledge), who insists that her surname is pronounced "Bouquet". The show consisted of five series and 44 episodes, four of which were Christmas specials. Production ended in 1995 after Routledge decided to move on to other projects. All 44 episodes have since been released on video, DVD and streaming media. The sitcom follows Hyacinth in her attempts to prove her social superiority, and to gain standing with those she considers upper class. Her attempts are constantly hampered by her lower class background, and extended family, whom she is desperate to hide. There have been two baronetcies created for the Onslow family, one in the Baronetage of England and one in the Baronetage of Great Britain. Both titles are extant. The Onslow baronetcy, of West Clandon in the County of Surrey, was created in the Baronetage of England on 8 May 1674 for Arthur Onslow, with the precedence of 1660. The second Baronet was created Baron Onslow in 1716 and the fourth Baron was created Earl of Onslow in 1801. For more information on this creation, see the latter title. The Onslow baronetcy, of Althain in the County of Lancaster, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 30 October 1797 for the naval commander Admiral Sir Richard Onslow. Earl of Onslow, of Onslow in the County of Shropshire and of Clandon Park in the County of Surrey, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1801 for George Onslow, 4th Baron Onslow. History The Onslow family descends from Arthur Onslow, who represented Bramber, Sussex and Guildford in the House of Commons. He was married to Mary, the daughter of Thomas Foote, who served as Lord Mayor of London in 1649, and had been created a baronet in 1660 (a title which became extinct on his death in 1687). In 1674, Onslow himself was created a baronet in the Baronetage of England, with the precedence of 1660. USS ''Onslow'' (AVP-48) was a United States Navy ''Barnegat''-class seaplane tender in commission from 1943 to 1947 and from 1951 to 1960. Constructioning and commissioning ''Onslow'' was laid down on 18 May 1942 by Lake Washington Shipyard at Houghton, Washington. She was launched on 20 September 1942, sponsored by Mrs. W. W. Fitts, and commissioned on 22 December 1943. World War II operations 1944-1945 After shakedown, ''Onslow'' departed the United States West Coast on 19 March 1944. She stopped at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Majuro before reporting for duty with Task Group 57.3 at Kwajalein. HMAS ''Onslow'' (SS 60/SSG 60) is one of six s, previously operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The submarine was named after the town of Onslow, Western Australia, and Sir Alexander Onslow, with the boat's motto and ship's badge, badge derived from Onslow's family heritage. Ordered in 1963, ''Onslow'' was laid down at the end of 1967 by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Scotland, launched almost a year later, and commissioned into the RAN at the end of 1969. During her career, ''Onslow'' became the first conventionally powered submarine to be fitted with anti-ship missiles, and was successful in wargames, "sinking" a seven-ship flotilla during Exercise Kangaroo 3 in 1980 and the United States supercarrier at RIMPAC 1998.
