Odia cinema, also known as Ollywood, is the segment of Indian cinema, dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Odia language widely spoken in the state of Odisha. Odia Cinema is based in Cuttack in Odisha, India. The name Ollywood is a portmanteau of the words Odia and Hollywood. Industry In 1974, the Government of Odisha declared film making and construction of cinema theatres as an industry in the state, and in 1976 it established the Odisha Film Development Corporation in Cuttack. History Odisha has a history of filmmaking, starting from 1936. The first Odia film is '' Sita Bibaha'', made by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami in 1936. Drawn from the Indian epic ''Ramayana'', the story is about the marriage of Sita and Ram. The film plot was made from a drama written by Kamapala Mishra. Prashanta Nanda
Prashanta Nanda (born 2 May 1947) is an Indian director, actor and politician from the state of Odisha. He is currently a Member of Parliament at Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, for Odisha. He had worked predominantly in Odia film industry but also worked in Bengali film industry and Hindi film industry extensively. He was also a former minister in Odisha state. Early life Prashanta Nanda was born in Cuttack, Odisha on 2 May 1947 to Kanchan and Jagannath Nanda. He did his schooling from Ravenshaw Collegiate School. His B.Sc. from Ravenshaw College, M.A. and Ph.D from Utkal University, LL.B. from Madhusudan Law College, and have D.Litt. from MIT University, Pune. ''Hakim Babu'' is a 1985 Indian Odia-language drama film directed by Pranab Das and starring Ajit Das, Jaya Swami and Bijaya Jena. The film marks the second collaboration between Pranab and Ajit Das after ''Sesha Pratikhya'' (1979). The story is based on Bibhuti Patnaik's novel of the same name and talks about industrialization and displacement in an Odisha village. The film was a box office success and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Odia. Ajit Das became a household name after the release of this film. Cuttack (, or officially Kataka in Odia language, Odia ), is the former capital, deputy capital and the 2nd largest city of the Indian state of Odisha. ''Seeta Bibaha'' (1936) was the first Oriya film directed by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami; it presented the marriage of Lord Rama to Sita, based on the epic story Ramayana. The film starred Makhanlal Bannerjee, Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami, Krishnachandra Singh, and Prabhavati. It premiered 28 April 1936 at the ''Laxmi Talkies'' of Puri. ''Sita Bibaha'' was the first complete Oriya film and an important part of the struggle for a manifestation of Oriya cultural identity in celluloid form. The film was a commercial success. The two-hour movie was subsequently released at ''Cinema Palace'' in Cuttack. It also drew numerous crowds at several touring assignments such as the "Radhakishen Chamelia Touring Cinema". Bijay Mohanty
Bijay Mohanty (8 April 1950 – 20 July 2020) was an Indian actor who worked primarily in Odia Cinema. He starred in the film '' Chilika Teerey'', which was honored a National Film Award. Personal life Mohanty was born in 1950 in an aristocratic Karan family at Pandiri, Kendrapara and brought up in Baripada, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. He started acting during his school days while studying at M.K.C High School. After his graduation with BA, he joined the National School of Drama. He passed successfully from the NSD with classmates like Naseeruddin Shah, Raj Babbar, and Om Puri etc. He acted in the theatres and stayed in Delhi up to 1975.
