Old Town (Polish language, Polish: ''Stare Miasto''; German language, German: ''Altstadt'') is a municipal neighbourhood of the city of Szczecin, Poland, situated on the left bank of the Oder river. It is the oldest historical district in the city. As of March 2021 it had a population of 3,901. West Pomeranian Voivodeship is a Voivodeships of Poland, voivodeship (province) in northwestern Poland. Its capital and largest city is Szczecin. Its area equals , and in 2021, it was inhabited by 1,682,003 people. It was established on 1 January 1999, out of the former Szczecin Voivodeship (1975–1998), Szczecin and Koszalin Voivodeship (1975–1998), Koszalin Voivodeships and parts of Gorzów Voivodeship, Gorzów, Piła Voivodeship, Piła and Słupsk Voivodeships, pursuant to the Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998. Grey Castle In Szczecin
The Grey Castle (German: ''Graues Schloß'', Polish: ''Szary Zamek'', ) was a tenement house in Szczecin, which was located at the corner of today's Polish Soldier Square and Independence Avenue, on the north-western edge of the Old Town, in the Centre district. It was destroyed during World War II. History The Grey Castle was built between 1904 and 1905 on the site of former barracks, existing between 1729 and 1903. The ground floor housed retail outlets as well as restaurants and coffeehouses. The building was bombed by the British Royal Air Force on 5/6 January 1944. Due to extensive damage, the building was demolished before the end of World War II. At the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, the Grey Castle was replaced by two twin blocks of flats designed by Alina Bursze, Teodor Bursze, Stanisław Płoski and Roman Szymborski. The Friedrich Pitzschky Tenement (; ), also known as the People's House (), was a tenement house, which was located at the corner of today's Wielka Odrzańska Street and New Market, in the Old Town, in the Centre district. It was destroyed in a bombardment in 1944. History The design of the building was created in 1875 to order of Friedrich Emil Pitzschky, the owner of an insurance company. The building permit was granted in June 1875 and the construction work was carried out between 1876 and 1877. The tenement housed the offices of insurance and shipping companies, including the management of Pitzschky's company. On 14 June 1910 the building was sold for 192,500 marks to the society "Volkshaus". In 1939 the building became the property of the representation of workers and employers of the Deutsche Arbeitsfronts Gau Pommern. The Stettiner General-Anzeiger Building in Szczecin () was an office building, which was located at the corner of today's Opłotki Street and New Market, in the Old Town, in the Centre district. It was destroyed in a bombardment in the 1940s. History The house was built in the late 19th century. It was designed by the architect C. Kelm. The building replaced two older buildings: tenement house no. 3 inhabited by a shoemaker Brünnlein and tenement house no. 4, which was owned by an innkeeper Müller. The new building became the seat of the editorial office of the newspaper Stettiner General-Anzeiger, founded by Ewald Gentzensohn in 1848. During the bombing of Szczecin between 1943 and 1944, the New Market area was destroyed. The surrounding buildings were demolished in the 1940s, but for unknown reasons the ruins of the Stettiner General-Anzeiger building survived until around 1954.
