Oberlin is a city in and the county seat of Decatur County, Kansas, Decatur County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, its population was 1,644. History Oberlin was platted in 1878. It was named after Oberlin, Ohio. Its first post office was established in April, 1878, and the city was incorporated in 1885. On September 30, 1878, Northern Cheyenne, fleeing from Indian Territory to their homes in the north during the Northern Cheyenne Exodus, attacked homesteaders near Oberlin, then a tiny hamlet. The raid's victims are commemorated in the "Last Indian Raid in Kansas" room of the Decatur County Museum, and by a monument in the town cemetery. Oberlin High School is a public high school for students in grades 7-12 in Oberlin, Louisiana. There are 223 students attending the school as of 2024, 40 percent of whom are minority students. History A school was established in Oberlin even before the town's incorporation in 1900, with students attending a public school under teacher Mary Burger as far back as 1896. The Allen Parish Police Jury held its first meeting after the parish was cleaved from Imperial Calcasieu in 1912 in the old schoolhouse, which was loaned for the occasion by the town's board of education. The Oberlin school became a state-approved high school in 1916 with Mr. Hiram Lyles serving as the school's first official principal. The school's original gymnasium was built by the Works Progress Administration and designed by Charles T. Roberts. The building was finished in 1939, but torn down. Academics There is a partnership between the high school and Oberlin College. Students who live within the district and attend Oberlin High School for their entire high school career may attend Oberlin College tuition-free, if accepted. Athletics The school is a member of the Lorain County League (LCL) The school colors are red, white and blue. The mascot is now the Phoenix, after the school board voted to discontinue use of its former Native American mascot at the end of the 2006–07 school year.
