Nitidulidae
The sap beetles, also known as Nitidulidae, are a family of beetles. They are small (2–6 mm) ovoid, usually dull-coloured beetles, with knobbed antennae. Some have red or yellow spots or bands. They feed mainly on decaying vegetable matter, over-ripe fruit, and sap. Some sap beetle species coexist with fungi species and live in habitats of coniferous trees. These fungi-dependent beetles are found in all across Europe and Siberia and are the biggest nutudulid species known in those areas. Other species like the Australian ''Chychramptodes murrayi'' are known to feed on scale insects. There are a few pest species, like the strawberry sap beetle that infest crops in Brazil between the months of August and February. Some common sap beetles include: * the picnic beetle, ''Glischrochilus quadrisignatus'' * the dusky sap beetle, ''Carpophilus lugubris'' * the strawberry sap beetle, ''Stelidota geminata'' * the small hive beetle, ''Aethina tumida'' The oldest unambiguou ...

Small Hive Beetle
''Aethina tumida,'' commonly known as small hive beetle (SHB), is a beekeeping pest. It is native to sub-Saharan Africa, but has spread to many other regions, including North America, Australia, and the Philippines. The small hive beetle primarily lives within the beehive and feeds on pollen, honey and dead bees. The colonization can cause severe damage to honeycomb, stored honey, and pollen. Beetle larvae may tunnel through combs of honey, feeding and defecating, causing discoloration and fermentation of the honey. If a beetle infestation is abundant and concentrated, they may cause bees to abandon their hive. Small hive beetles have shown unique behavior associated with pheromones. They can sense the honeybee's alarm pheromone, which is primarily released by the host to inform the host guards about the presence of invaders. This fitness advantage improves their ability to quickly locate and colonize the honeybee hives. The host has evolved some strategies to cope with the col ...

Picnic Beetle
''Glischrochilus'' (sometimes misspelled as ''Glisrochilus'') is a genus of sap-feeding and predatory beetles under the family Nitidulidae, subfamily Cryptarchinae. Most members of this genus are commonly known as picnic beetles or beer bugs. Description ''Glischrochilus'' are oblong shiny black beetles with attractive yellow, red, or orange markings on their elytra. Their elytra are short and expose the upper surface of their last abdominal segments, a good way to distinguish them from the superficially similar but generally larger '' Megalodacne'' beetles. They are so similar that some species of ''Glischrochilus'' were once classified along with ''Megalodacne'' under the now reclassified genus '' Ips''. Like other nitulidid beetles, adult ''Glischrochilus'' can be distinguished from other kinds of sap-feeding beetles by their characteristic 11-segmented antennae that end with a 3-segmented ball-like club. ''Glischrochilus'' are among the largest of the nitulidid beetles, but ...

Miskoramus
''Miskoramus'' is a genus of sap-feeding beetles in the family Nitidulidae, first described in 1992 by A. G. Kirejtshuk and J. F. Lawrence. The generic name is formed from the surname Misko, in memory of Stefan Misko, an entomologiest at the CSIRO and also a well-known artist and member of Canberra's Ukrainian community. Only one species is described: ''Miskoramus pulcher'', known only from the vicinity of Port Macquarie Port Macquarie, sometimes shortened to Port Mac and commonly locally nicknamed Port, is a coastal city on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, north of Sydney, and south of Brisbane, on the Tasman Sea coast at the mouth of the ..., New South Wales. Description The body of ''Miskoramus pulcher'' is a shiny reddish-brown and the legs yellowi-red. Little is known of the life-cycle of the beetle, though a related species is a predator of wattle tick scale (''Cryptes baccatus''), and the physical features of ''M. pulcher'' also suggest prot ...

Epuraea
''Epuraea'' is a genus of sap-feeding beetles in the family Nitidulidae, first described in 1843 by Wilhelm Ferdinand Erichson. There are at least 40 described species in ''Epuraea''. Their most notable food source is sap but these beetles also feed on organic matter such as fruits, flowers, fungi, decaying plant tissue, and the tissue of dead animals. Some species occur in bumblebee nests. ''Epuraea'' beetles commonly overwinter underneath logs or in soil. Description According to a key to North American nitidulid genera, ''Epuraea'' has the following combination of features: head vertical, labrum free, prothorax not margined at base, elytra truncate apically to expose only pygidium (and, at most, the posterior edge of the penultimate abdominal tergite), middle and hind tibiae with two rows of small marginal spines on their outer edges, a tarsal formula of 5-5-5 (meaning each tarsus has five segments), and the first three tarsomeres bilobed.
