Nisporeni () is a town in Moldova and the administrative center of Nisporeni District. History The first historical appearance was in 1618. The Romanian People's Salvation Cross, the largest cross in Moldova, was built in 2011 in Nisporeni. Demographics According to the 2014 census, the population of Nisporeni amounted to 10,063 inhabitants, a decrease compared to the previous census in 2004, when 12,105 inhabitants were registered. Of these, 4,895 were men and 5,168 were women. Nisporeni District
Nisporeni () is a district () in west-central Moldova, with its administrative center at Nisporeni. According to the 2014 census, its population was 53,154; most (82.8 percent) are Moldovans. History The Vărzărești monastery was first mentioned on 25 April 1420. The oldest locations in the district ( Bălăurești, Ciutești, Seliște, Nisporeni and Vărzărești) were first mentioned in 1420-1425. The 15th to 18th centuries were marked by economic (trade and agriculture) and cultural development (the construction of monasteries and churches) and population growth. The city of Nisporeni was first mentioned by Gaspar Graziani in his book dated 4 January 1618. According to Graziani, at that time Nisporeni was ruled by Farima Nicolae II, descendant of the Farima dynasty and cousin of Michael the Brave. Nicolae II is one of Moldova's national heroes. Romanian People's Salvation Cross
The Romanian People's Salvation Cross () is a monumental cross in Nisporeni, Moldova. The cross has a height of and is the largest cross in Moldova. Constructuion The monument was built in 2011 on Zghihara Hill (Dealul Zghihara) at an altitude of ; Zghihara Hill is one of the highest hills in Moldova. The monumental cross is illuminated by LEDs during night and is visible at tens of kilometers. The monument was opened on August 28, 2011, by Petru, the Metropolitan of Bessarabia, Teofan Savu (Archbishop of Iaşi and Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina), and Corneliu Bârlădeanul Onila (Vicar Archprelate of the Bishopric of Huşi). Speranța Nisporeni was a Moldovan football club based in Nisporeni, Moldova.
