Lake Nipissing (; , ) is a lake in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Ontario. It has a surface area of , a mean elevation of above sea level, and is located between the Ottawa River and Georgian Bay. Lake Nipissing is the third-largest lake entirely in Ontario. It is relatively shallow for a large lake, with an average depth of only . The shallowness of the lake makes for many Shoal, sandbars along the lake's irregular shoreline. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 64 m (210 ft) near the mouth of the French River (Ontario), French River, off the shore of Blueberry Island. The lake has many islands most of which are protected under the Protection of Significant Wetlands scheme, controlled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Nipissing First Nation
Nipissing First Nation (), meaning , is a long-standing community of Nishnaabeg peoples, who traditionally speak Anishinaabemwin, located along the shorelines of Lake Nipissing in northern Ontario. They are referred to by many names in European historical records, since the colonists often adopted names given to them by other nations. The Nbisiing Anishinaabeg have roots in both the Ojibwe and Algonquin nations, making up part of the wider grouping of Anishinaabe peoples. Their heritage is a result of the fact that the Nipissing homeland sits at a geographical crossroads, existing between the traditional territories of the Ojibwe around the Great Lakes and the Algonquin country covering much of the Kitchi-sipi watershed. Nipissing District is a district in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. It was created in 1858. The district seat is North Bay. In 2021, the population was 84,716. West Nipissing, Ontario
West Nipissing is a municipality in Northeastern Ontario, Canada, on Lake Nipissing in the Nipissing District. It was formed on January 1, 1999, with the amalgamation of seventeen and a half former towns, villages, townships and unorganized communities. It is the most bilingual community in Ontario, with 73.4% of its population fluent in both English and French. Communities The primary administrative and commercial centre of West Nipissing is the community of Sturgeon Falls, which is situated on the Sturgeon River, north of Lake Nipissing and west of North Bay on Highway 17, part of the Trans-Canada Highway. The Nipissing River is a river in the Saint Lawrence River drainage basin in the Unorganized South Part of Nipissing District in northeastern Ontario, Canada. Shows the river course. The river is entirely within Algonquin Provincial Park, and is a left tributary of the Petawawa River. Course The river begins at Big Bob Lake in geographic Paxton Township and flows east, passes briefly through geographic Butt Township and geographic Devine Township, turns north into geographic Biggar Township, then back east, over Stewart's Dam and through the Allen Rapids, and into geographic Osler Township. It continues east over Graham's Dam, the High Falls and Gauthier's Dam, enters geographic Lister Township, flows over the Perley Dam and Rolling Dam, and empties into Cedar Lake on the Petawawa River, across the lake from the community of Brent. Nipissing, Ontario
Nipissing is an incorporated (political) township in Parry Sound District in Central Ontario, Canada. It is on Lake Nipissing and is part of the Almaguin Highlands region. Nipissing was surveyed between 1874 and 1881, and was incorporated in 1888. Among the first settlers in the area were the Chapman and Beatty families. Nipissing Township annexed Gurd Township in 1970. The township also contains a community named Nipissing, which is located on the South River near Chapman's Landing, on the South Bay of Lake Nipissing. The township administrative offices are located in Nipissing. The township includes the communities of Alsace, Christian Valley, Commanda, Hotham, Nipissing and Wade's Landing. Nipissing University is a public university located in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. The campus overlooks Lake Nipissing. History Northeastern University (1960–1967) The roots of Nipissing University date back to 1947, when residents of North Bay formed a committee with the goal of establishing a university within the city. The 1958 Northeastern University Committee continued their efforts in the following years. By 1960, Northeastern University was established and for a short time in 1960–1961, the institution offered first year university courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce in facilities provided by a local Catholic boys' high school. Nipissing was a federal electoral district (Canada), electoral district that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1896 to 2004. It was located in the northeastern part of Ontario, Canada. When it was first created, the riding took in the eastern half of Northeastern Ontario, including the towns of North Bay, Ontario, North Bay and Greater Sudbury, Sudbury. Before 1892, this region was part of the electoral district of Renfrew North (federal electoral district), Renfrew North. Nipissing is a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of Ontario, which elects one member to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. It is located in the northeastern part of Ontario, centred on the city of North Bay. Nipissing—Timiskaming is a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 2004. The riding was formed by the amalgamation of the former Nipissing riding with the southeastern portion of the former Timiskaming—Cochrane riding.
