Newton, Iowa
Newton is the county seat of, and most populous city in, Jasper County, Iowa, United States. Located east of Des Moines, Iowa, Des Moines, Newton is in Central Iowa. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 Census, the city population was 15,760. It is the home of Iowa Speedway and Maytag Dairy Farms. History Early history Newton was founded in 1846 as Newton City, then shortened to Newton in 1847 and incorporated as a city in 1857. It was named to pair with Jasper County, following a common American naming scheme at the time in honor of American Revolutionary War, Revolutionary War soldiers John Newton (soldier), John Newton and William Jasper. In the late 19th century, Newton's growth was fueled by the development of coal mines in the region. There are 99 counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The first two counties, Des Moines County and Dubuque County, were created in 1834 when Iowa was still part of the Michigan Territory. In preparation for Michigan's statehood, part of Michigan Territory was formed into Wisconsin Territory in 1836. Two years later, the western portion was split off to become Iowa Territory. The south-eastern part of Iowa Territory became Iowa, the 29th state in the union, on December 28, 1846, by which point 44 counties had been created. Counties continued to be created by the state government until 1857, when the last county, Humboldt County, was created. Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) is a Public college, public Community colleges in the United States, community college in central Iowa. The college served 35,488 credit students and 29,021 noncredit students in 200 programs in 2019. History Des Moines Area Community College was created on March 18, 1966. Iowa Telecommunications Services, Inc., commonly known as Iowa Telecom, provided local telephone service to former GTE customers in the U.S. states of Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and Minnesota. Iowa Telecom was founded in 1999 as a partnership between Iowa Network Services and ING Barings. It acquired the assets of GTE Midwest, which served Iowa following Bell Atlantic's purchase of GTE. The Maytag Corporation is an American home and commercial appliance company. The company has been owned by Whirlpool Corporation since April 2006. 113th Cavalry Regiment
The 113th Cavalry Regiment is a cavalry regiment of the Iowa National Guard, with history tracing back to the 19th century Indian Wars. It was heavily involved in fighting during World War II against German forces in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany from June 1944 to May 1945. A new unit bearing the name of the 113th Cavalry was reactivated in 1992.
