The New Zealand Open in badminton is an international tournament held in New Zealand. In 2011, the New Zealand International was originally scheduled to be a BWF Grand Prix Gold and Grand Prix, Grand Prix event, but was downgraded to BWF International Challenge, International Challenge level due to lack of funding. This tournament has been a part of BWF World Tour since 2018. On 6 March 2023, the Badminton World Federation announced that Badminton New Zealand has relinquished its rights to host the tournament until 2026. Nicholas Hall (born 19 September 1970) is a former badminton competitor for New Zealand. He has won three bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games, at the 1994 Commonwealth Games he won the bronze medal in the men's singles competition. Badminton New Zealand is the badminton organisation in New Zealand which was established in 1927 under the stewardship of Archdeacon Ralph Creed Meredith of Whanganui, one of its first champions, and became a founding member of Badminton World Federation (then known as International Badminton Federation) in 1934. It was incorporated on 26 May 1938 and responsible for promotion and development of badminton in New Zealand. Badminton New Zealand has 27 regional member associations and also organises the New Zealand Open badminton tournament. The Badminton World Federation, aka BWF, is the international governing body for the sport of badminton approved by the International Olympic Committee. It was founded on 5 July 1934 as the International Badminton Federation with nine member nations: Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. In 1981, the IBF merged with the World Badminton Federation, and on 24 September 2006, at the Extraordinary General Meeting in Madrid, the name of the organization was changed to Badminton World Federation. BWF World Tour
The BWF World Tour is a Grade 2 badminton tournament series, sanctioned by Badminton World Federation (BWF). It is a competition open to the top world ranked players in singles (men's and women's) and doubles (men's, women's and mixed). The competition was announced on 19 March 2017 and came into effect starting from 2018, replacing the BWF Super Series, which was held from 2007 to 2017. The BWF World Tour are divided into six levels, namely World Tour Finals, Super 1000, Super 750, Super 500, and Super 300 in order (part of the HSBC World Tour). One other category of tournament, the BWF Tour Super 100 level, also offers ranking points. Badminton is a racquet sport played using racket (sports equipment), racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net (device), net.
