Nerdcore
Nerdcore is a genre of hip hop music characterized by subject matter considered of interest to nerds and geeks. Self-described nerdcore musician MC Frontalot has the earliest known recorded use of the term (to describe this genre) in the 2000 song "Nerdcore Hiphop". Frontalot, like most nerdcore artists, self-publishes his work and has released much of it for free online. As a niche genre, nerdcore generally holds to the DIY ethic, and has a history of self-publishing and self-production. Though nerdcore rappers rhyme about anything from politics to science fiction, there are some perennial favorites in nerdcore subject matter, including anime, ''movies'', role-playing games, science, high fantasy, fantasy and computers. MC Frontalot
Damian Alexander Hess (born December 3, 1973), better known by his stage name MC Frontalot, is an American rapper and web designer. He is widely credited as a pioneer of the nerdcore hip hop genre, blending elements of hip hop with themes from nerd culture. Career Early days Hess began releasing music as MC Frontalot in 1999. He gained early recognition through Song Fight!, an online songwriting and recording competition, where he consistently outperformed competitors. Although he has entered only seven songs under the name MC Frontalot, he has never lost a competition. One notable entry, "Romantic Cheapskate," received 614 votes, far surpassing the next closest competitor with 28 votes. In this song, Frontalot metaphorically compares Song Fight! to a neglected lover who remains loyal despite his indifference. Bryce Case Jr. (born August 23, 1982), otherwise known as YTCracker (pronounced "''whitey cracker''"), is an American rapper from La Mirada, California. His stage name derives from having formerly been a black hat hacker. Case is best known for his contributions to the hacking community along with nerdcore hip hop subculture. During his criminal career, he became known for defacing the webpages of several federal and municipal government websites in the United States, as well as several in the private industry at the age of 17. Raheem Jarbo (born September 3, 1977), also known by his stage names Mega Ran and Random, is an American Underground hip hop, underground nerdcore rapper, chiptune DJ, author and record producer. In February 2015, he changed his stage name to Mega Ran, removing Random from any releases. Early life Jarbo was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to an American-born mother and African-born father. He has stated in interviews that he wrote his first song in 1993 and began producing in 2000. Nintendocore
Nintendocore is a broadly defined style of music that most commonly fuses chiptune and video game music with hardcore punk and/or heavy metal. The genre is sometimes considered a direct subgenre of post-hardcore and a fusion genre between metalcore and chiptune. Characteristics Referred to as the "bastard child of chiptune and metal," Nintendocore frequently features the use of electric guitars, drum kits, and typical rock instrumentation alongside synthesizers, chiptune, 8-bit sounds, and electronically produced beats. It originated primarily from hardcore punk and heavy metal, and subgenres of those styles such as post-hardcore, metalcore, and screamo. Nerdcore Rising
''Nerdcore Rising'' is the official debut album by nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot. The album was first released on August 27, 2005 at the Penny Arcade Expo. It consists of 16 tracks; six new tracks and ten "classic megahits" that Frontalot had previously made available through his website. Vocals for each of the old songs have been re-recorded, and production on these tracks range from slight variation on the original to drastic revisions. The voice of the "preacher" character in the song "Indier Than Thou" was provided by Remy Auberjonois, son of René Auberjonois, the actor who portrayed Odo on the science fiction series '' Star Trek: Deep Space Nine''. Geek Rock
Geek rock is a musical subgenre derived from pop rock and alternative rock within the nerd music group. It is characterized by the standard instruments of rock music often combined with electronic and unusual instruments, references to geek culture and specialized yet mundane interests, whimsy, and offbeat humor in general. Characteristics Geek rock is characterised by strong use of both electronic instruments and more atypical musical instruments, such as accordions or ukuleles. "Funky Drummer" is a song by James Brown recorded in 1969 and released as a single in 1970. Its drum break, Musical improvisation, improvised by Clyde Stubblefield, is one of the most frequently sampling (music), sampled music recordings. Recording and composition "Funky Drummer" was recorded on November 20, 1969, in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is an extended Vamp (music), vamp, with individual instruments (mostly the guitar, tenor saxophones and Organ (music), organ) improvising brief lick (music), licks on top. In popular music, a break is an instrumental or percussion instrument, percussion section during a song derived from or related to stop-time – being a "break" from the main section (music), parts of the song or piece. A break is usually interpolated between sections of a song, to provide a sense of anticipation, signal the start of a new section, or create variety in the arrangement. Jazz A solo break in jazz occurs when the rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) stops playing behind a soloist for a brief period, usually two or four bars leading into the soloist's first improvised solo chorus (at which point the rhythm section resumes playing).
