Neoclassical architecture in Russia developed in the second half of the 18th century, especially after Catherine the Great succeeded to the throne on June 28, 1762, becoming Empress of Russia. Neoclassical architecture developed in many Russian cities, first of all St. Petersburg, which was undergoing its transformation into a modern capital throughout the reign of Catherine II. Origin of the style Background As part of the European cosmopolitan class of the 18th century, Catherine set the tone of Russian social and intellectual life during her long reign. The Catherinian Era was a turning point in terms of the education of nobility, particularly in the fields of art and literature. Jean-Baptiste Vallin De La Mothe
Jean-Baptiste Michel Vallin de la Mothe (1729 – 7 May 1800) was a French architect whose major career was spent in St. Petersburg, where he became court architect to Catherine II. His students were Ivan Starov and Vasily Bazhenov. Biography Early years and education He was born in Angoulême. Vallin de la Mothe graduated in 1750 in Paris, soon with the help of his cousin Jacques-François Blondel he entered the French Academy in Rome. According to his letters of that period, Vallin de la Mothe had a great interest to Andrea Palladio and Vincenzo Scamozzi. Beginning in 1750, Vallin de la Mothe spent two years studying at the French Academy in Rome, though not as an official ''pensionnaire''. Emil Kaufmann
Emil Kaufmann (1891 in Vienna – 1953 in Cheyenne, Wyoming) was an Austrian art and History of architecture, architecture historian. He was the son of Max Kaufmann (died 1902), a businessman, and Friederike Baumwald (Kaufmann) (born 1862). Kaufmann is best known for his studies of Neoclassical architecture, neo-classicism. Career From 1913 he studied at both the University of Innsbruck and the University of Vienna. In Vienna he studied under Max Dvořák, Josef Strzygowski and Moriz Dreger in the spirit of the so-called Vienna School of Art History, such as Alois Riegl and Franz Wickhoff, who attempted to give greater objectivity to the study of art. Kaufmann fought as a soldier in World War I and afterwards attended to his studies intermittently because of illness. A spire is a tall, slender, pointed structure on top of a roof of a building or tower, especially at the summit of church steeples. The Riding Mountain (, ''katalnaya gora'', ''katalnaya gorka'') was the name of two entertainment pavilions built in 1754–1757 in Tsarskoye Selo and in 1762–1774 in Oranienbaum royal residences of the Russian Empress Catherine the Great.
