It includes 45 species native to the Americas. In North America they range from western Canada through the western and west-central United States to northwestern Mexico, and to Ohio and Pennsylvania. In South America they range through Argentina and Chile. The inflorescence which bears the flowers is surrounded by frilly green bracts bearing soft spines, giving it the appearance of a pincushion. Several species are members of the vernal pool ecosystem. Species 45 species are accepted. *'' Navarretia aeroides'' *'' Navarretia atractyloides'' - hollyleaf pincushionplant *'' Navarretia breweri'' - Brewer's pincushionplant *'' Navarretia capillaris'' - miniature gilia *'' Navarretia cotulifolia'' - cotulaleaf pincushionplant *'' Navarretia crystallina'' *'' Navarretia divaricata'' - divaricate navarreti ...

Navarretia Fossalis
''Navarretia fossalis'' is a rare species of flowering plant in the phlox family known by the common name spreading navarretia. Distribution The plant is native to southern California and Baja California, where it is known only from vernally wet areas, such as vernal pools, ditches, and other areas that are wet or flooded during the rainy season and dry the rest of the year. Many of these habitat areas have alkali soils arranged in uneven mounds and depressions that collect water and drain slowly before drying up.USFWSProposed Revised Critical Habitat for ''Navarretia fossalis'' (Spreading Navarretia).June 10, 2009. The plant became a federally listed threatened species in the United States in 1998, when there were approximately 30 occurrences of the species remaining in Southern California and about nine left across the border in Baja California. By 2009, an additional 17 occurrences had been documented. The plant often occurs with '' Psilocarphus brevissimus''. Description ' ...

''Navarretia heterodoxa'' is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family known by the common name Calistoga pincushionplant. It is endemic to the San Francisco Bay Area in California, where it grows in the serpentine soils of the hills and mountains. It is a hairy annual herb producing a slender stem up to about 24 centimeters long. It is glandular and emits a skunky scent. The leaves are divided into threadlike or needlelike lobes. The inflorescence is a head of flowers lined with palmate bract In botany, a bract is a modified or specialized leaf, associated with a reproductive structure such as a flower, inflorescence axis or cone scale. It is native to North America, including much of the western United States and central Canada. It generally grows in wet or moist terrestrial habitat such as vernal pools. It is an annual herb producing a slender, hairy stem. The plant's appearance is variable, and there are several subspecies that differ slightly. The leaves are strap-shaped with abrupt divisions into small, narrow teeth at intervals. The inflorescence is a head filled with spine-toothed, leaflike bract In botany, a bract is a modified or specialized leaf, associated with a reproductive structure such as a flower, inflorescence axis or cone scale.
