Nature Conservation In Malaysia
Conservation in Malaysia is an issue of national importance. As a megadiverse country, Malaysia is rich in wildlife, endemic species and unique habitats. Wildlife protection began in some form as early as the 1880s, before the formation of Malaysia. The country ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1994 and by 2019 had joined 17 multilateral environmental agreements related to biodiversity. Despite having numerous national parks and protected areas, and implementing conservation policies and legislation, forest loss and other environmental issues present major challenges for biodiversity conservation. Another challenge is the inclusion of indigenous peoples in conservation efforts. A non-governmental organization (NGO) is an independent, typically nonprofit organization that operates outside government control, though it may get a significant percentage of its funding from government or corporate sources. Malaysian Wildlife Law
Malaysian Wildlife Law () consists of the regulation, protection, conservation and management of wildlife in Malaysia. The Constitution of Malaysia empowers those at the federal and the states level to make laws regarding wildlife resources. As such, eleven states in peninsular are managed under an act while Sabah enacted an enactment and Sarawak an ordinance. Fisheries Act 1985
The Fisheries Act 1985 () is a Malaysian federal act relating to the administration and management of fisheries, including the conservation and development of maritime and estuarine fishing and fisheries in Malaysia waters, protection to aquatic mammals and turtles and riverine fishing in Malaysia and to matters connected to establishment of marine parks and marine reserves. A marine protected area (MPA) is a protected area of the world's seas, oceans, estuaries or in the US, the Great Lakes. These marine areas can come in many forms ranging from wildlife refuges to research facilities. MPAs restrict human activity for a conservation purpose, typically to protect natural or cultural resources. Such marine resources are protected by local, state, territorial, native, regional, national, or international authorities and differ substantially among and between nations. This variation includes different limitations on development, fishing practices, fishing seasons and catch limits, moorings and bans on removing or disrupting marine life. MPAs can provide economic benefits by supporting the fishing industry through the revival of fish stocks, as well as job creation and other market benefits via ecotourism. Department Of Wildlife And National Parks
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (; Jawi: ), abbreviated PERHILITAN, is a governmental organisation that is responsible for the protection, management and preservation of wildlife and national parks in Peninsular Malaysia. The department was established under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 which consolidated all the state game departments in Peninsular Malaysia. As of 2006, the department is placed under the purview of Malaysian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment. It is headed by a director-general and that post is currently held by Dato’ Abdul Kadir bin Abu Hashim. Megadiverse Countries
A megadiverse country is one of a group of nations that house the majority of Earth's species and high numbers of endemic species. Conservation International identified 17 megadiverse countries in 1998, all of which are located at least partially in tropical or subtropical regions. ''Megadiversity'' means to exhibit great biodiversity. The main criterion for megadiverse countries is endemism at the level of species, genera and families. A megadiverse country must have at least 5,000 species of endemic plants and must border marine ecosystems.
