Nature's Best
''Nature's Best'' is a two-disc compilation album of thirty New Zealand popular music songs, selected by a panel as the top thirty New Zealand songs of all time. Selection The genesis of the idea was the 75th anniversary of the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) in New Zealand in 2001 and the selection of the top 100 New Zealand songs of the past 75 years. A list of over 900 candidate songs was prepared, and voting was open to APRA members and an invited academy. The list of the top 100 songs was announced in stages in 2001, with the number one place going to the 1969 song "Nature" by Fourmyula. A collaborative effort by representatives of major record companies and APRA - most notably Mike Chunn - took place to produce an album of the top 30 songs from this selection. The resulting album was named ''Nature's Best'' after the title song, and was released in January 2002 on the Sony Music label. Sales were extraordinary - in the first four months after its relea ...

Loyal (Dave Dobbyn Song)
"Loyal" is a single by New Zealand singer/songwriter Dave Dobbyn, released in 1988 from the album of the same name. The song reached number 19 on the New Zealand charts and has since become a cult song for the nation. Background Dobbyn wrote the song in Sydney, with the opening harmonic progression coming about from playing with a newly bought guitar. He co-produced the single, and in retrospect is not entirely happy with the result, preferring live versions such as that from the Together in Concert: Live tour with Bic Runga and Tim Finn. Music video The music video for Loyal was directed by Kerry Brown and is a one-shot video of Dobbyn and a woman moving out of a house. It was met with mixed reception and there is some argument about the appropriateness of the imagery for the song. Dobbyn's patterned jersey also received some derision. Legacy In 2001, Loyal was voted the third-best New Zealand song of the 20th century by APRA, and featured on the related '' Nature's Best' ...

Slice Of Heaven
"Slice of Heaven" is a single by New Zealand singer-songwriter Dave Dobbyn with the band Herbs, released in 1986 on the soundtrack of the animated motion picture, '' Footrot Flats: The Dog's Tail Tale''. The single reached 1 on the New Zealand Singles Chart for eight weeks and on the Australian Singles Chart for four weeks. It appears on Dobbyn's 1988 album, '' Loyal''. Background Dobbyn was writing in Sydney when he was given the opportunity to compose for the ''Footrot Flats'' film. He had previously used the line "Slice of Heaven" in the DD Smash album ''The Optimist'', specifically "Don't Give Up" and chose to revisit it. He brought in Herbs to sing in the background based on his childhood experiences of Pacific gospel choirs. Composition The song incorporates a synthesised Japanese flute made with an E-mu Emulator II. Reception The song gained huge exposure in Australasia through the ''Footrot Flats'' trailer being shown before the popular ''Crocodile Dundee'' film, leadi ...

It's Chinese, it's a strange vowel sound which doesn't seem to translate in Australia. It means the colour of jade, which might mean green." Runga grew up in Hornby, Christchurch, surrounded by a musically inclined family, and started recording songs with her sisters, B ...

Finn founded the band in 1972 with Phil Judd and served as lead singer and principal songwriter. Following Judd's departure in 1977, he was joined by brother Neil Finn, Neil. Finn wrote or co-wrote some of the band's best-known songs, including "I See Red (Split Enz song), I See Red" and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". While still a member of Split Enz, he began a solo career, scoring the two hits "Fraction Too Much Friction" and "Made My Day" in 1983; he left the band in early 1984, briefly returning for their farewell tour later that year. Split Enz
Split Enz were a New Zealand band formed in 1972. Regarded as the first New Zealand band to gain significant recognition outside of Australasia, they were initially noted for their progressive rock, progressive/art rock sound, flamboyant visual style and theatrical performances. The band later moved toward a pop/new wave sound that yielded the breakthrough hit single "I Got You (Split Enz song), I Got You" (1980). Split Enz broke up in 1984. Since that time, the band has staged several brief reunions. History Tim Finn/Phil Judd era (1972–1977) Originally named Split Ends, presumably referencing Trichoptilosis, split ends of hairs, the band were formed by songwriters Tim Finn (vocals) and Phil Judd (guitar/vocals). The original line-up was completed by Mike Chunn (bass), Miles Golding (violin) and Mike Howard (flute), with the band making their first live appearance on 10 December 1972, at the Wynyard Tavern in Auckland, New Zealand. At the beginning of 1973, they were joined ...

Six Months In A Leaky Boat
"Six Months in a Leaky Boat" is a song by New Zealand art rock group Split Enz. It was released in May 1982 as the second single from the group's album, '' Time and Tide''. The song became a top-10 hit in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, going on to be voted the fifth-best New Zealand song ever in the 2001 Australasian Performing Right Association list. Its chart performance was less successful in the United Kingdom, owing to its release during the Falklands War. Despite being recorded prior to the outbreak of the conflict, some in Britain considered the song to be veiled criticism of the war with Argentina. The song was consequently removed from many radio playlists in the United Kingdom, including the BBC, since it was considered that references to ''leaky boats'' were inappropriate during the naval action in the war. At the 1982 Countdown Music Awards, the song was nominated for Best Australian Single. Music video The video shows band members dressed in nautical gear, and ...
