The National Monuments of Chile (Spanish language, Spanish: ''Monumentos Nacionales de Chile [MN]'', are those places, and properties, moveable or fixed, protected by the State of Chile under the 1970 Law No. 17,288 for the protection of National Monuments. This protection is managed by the Council of National Monuments (Spanish: '':es:Consejo_de_Monumentos_Nacionales, Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales [CMN])'' owing to the historical, artistic, scientific or commemorative value of those properties designated as national monuments, which represent the country's cultural heritage. Los Ríos Region
The Los Ríos Region (Spanish: ''Región de Los Ríos'', , ''Region of the Rivers'') is one of Chile's 16 regions, the country's first-order administrative divisions. Its capital is Valdivia. It began to operate as a region on October 2, 2007, having been created by subdividing the Los Lagos Region in southern Chile. It consists of two provinces: Valdivia and the newly created Ranco Province, which was formerly part of Valdivia Province. Economy The region's economy is based on forestry, cattle farming, tourism, manufacturing, and services. Chacabuco
Chacabuco is one of the many abandoned nitrate or "saltpeter" towns ("oficinas salitreras" in Spanish) in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. Other nitrate towns of the Atacama Desert include Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works. Unlike most of the other ghost towns in the Atacama Desert, Chacabuco became a concentration camp during the Pinochet regime in 1973. To this day, it remains surrounded by approximately 98 lost landmines, left by the Chilean military when Chacabuco was used as a prison camp. Nitrate town history Founded in 1924 by the Lautaro Nitrate Company Ltd., Chacabuco soon fell into ruin as the nitrate mining boom in Chile came to an abrupt halt at the end of the 1930s. Biblioteca De Santiago
The Biblioteca de Santiago (BDS) is a public library in downtown Santiago, Chile. It was inaugurated on November 11, 2005 by the then president of Chile Ricardo Lagos. The library is operated by the Servicio Nacional del Patrimonio Cultural, and is the largest and most advanced public library in Chile. The library occupies an entire city block bounded by Agustinas, Matucana, Moneda and Chacabuco Streets. The library serves the Santiago Metropolitan Region, complementing the services offered by the municipal libraries and the Biblioteca Nacional, filling the gap between both kinds of libraries. Ambassador (clipper)
''Ambassador'' is a United Kingdom tea clipper built in 1869. She was a composite clipper, built with wooden planking over an iron skeleton and was W. Lund & Co's first tea clipper. She is now a beached wreck in southern Chile. History William Walker built ''Ambassador'' at Lavender Dry Dock in London. Though considered a fast ship, ''Ambassador'' was said to be "very cranky and overmasted". Her first passage to the UK from Fuzhou came during the Tea Race of 1870 under Captain Duggan and took 115 days, a mediocre performance; that same year the fastest tea passage, also from Fuzhou, was made by the clipper in just 98 days. ''Ambassador''s fastest passage between China and England was 108 days, in 1872. ''Ambassador'' has been beached at Estancia San Gregorio, Chile since 1899. Agustín Ross Cultural Centre
Agustín Ross Cultural Centre (Spanish, '' Centro Cultural Agustín Ross''), previously known as Casino Ross (''Ross Casino''), is the cultural center of the city of Pichilemu in Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region, Chile. It was constructed between 1906 and 1909 at the request of politician Agustín Ross Edwards. The structure of the cultural center is very similar to that of the Grand Trianon in Palace of Versailles, Versailles, France. It is best known for housing one of the first casinos of Chile; a casino operated in the building between 1917 and 1931. After 1931 all casinos, except the newly opened Casino de Viña del Mar, were declared illegal. The building has also been used as a post office, a store selling imported goods, a hotel, a discotheque, and a bar.
