National Basketball League (England)
The National Basketball League, or NBL for short, is a league competition representing semi-professional and amateur basketball clubs from England and Wales. It forms levels 2 to 5 on the British basketball pyramid, in line with the Scottish Basketball Championship, sitting directly below the top tier competition, Super League Basketball. For the 2024-25 season, the league will have teams split across four levels: :Division 1 (NBL1) (13 teams) :Division 2 (NBL2) (24 teams across 2 regions) :Division 3 (NBL3) (40 teams across 4 regions) :Conference (51 teams across 5 pools) The league also runs the English Women's Basketball League, with Division 1 and Division 2 North and South, and a junior structure with over 630 teams competing in Under-18s, Under-16s, Under-14s and Under-12s leagues. 1973–74 National Basketball League Season
The 1973–74 Clarks Men's Shoes National Basketball League season was the second season of the newly formulated National Basketball League. The league and cup was sponsored by Clarks Men's Shoes and the number of teams increased to eight. The Avenue club moved from Leyton to Edmonton and the Sutton club merged with Crystal Palace. Four new teams appeared in the form of the Doncaster Panthers, the Manchester Giants and two more London based teams the Islington & London Latvian Embassy All-Stars and the London YMCA Metros. The Sutton & Crystal Palace team completed the double of National League and Cup beginning what would soon be a dynasty for the Crystal Palace team. 1983–84 National Basketball League Season
The 1983–84 Wimpey Homes National Basketball League season was the twelfth season of the National Basketball League formed in the United Kingdom in 1972. The league was sponsored by Wimpey Homes and Solent Stars achieved a clean sweep of National League, Play Offs and National Cup. Teams played each other three times in the league during the season. The Channel 4 exposure had assisted in teams finding sponsors but a decision by the Independent Broadcasting Authority to ban shirt advertising suddenly jeopardised these sponsorships. The 1982–83 Just Juice National Basketball League season was the eleventh season of the National Basketball League formed in 1972. The league was sponsored by Just Juice for the second consecutive year and Crystal Palace won yet another league title but Sunderland claimed the Play Off's and the Solent Stars successfully defended their National Cup crown.The league received a welcome boost when a new national TV channel called Channel 4 decided to show live action every Monday evening. The 1981–82 Just Juice National Basketball League season was the tenth season of the National Basketball League formed in 1972. The league was sponsored by Just Juice and Crystal Palace once again secured a double (League and Play Off's) but the Solent Stars easily won the National Cup. Team changes Three new teams were entered into the expanded 12 team first division. The three top teams from the previous season's second division; the Solent Stars, TCB Brighton and Liverpool were all admitted and Stockport Belgrade took the decision to move away from their fan base to the new Spectrum Arena in Warrington becoming Birchwood Warrington Vikings. Birmingham Team Fiat
The Birmingham Bullets were a British professional basketball team from Birmingham, England who competed in the British Basketball League (BBL). The club was founded in 1974 as Coventry Granwood before moving to Birmingham in 1980 as part of the team's sponsorship agreement with Fiat. The Bullets achieved some success in the BBL, mostly in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including winning the Playoffs in 1996 and 1998. They also achieved a 2nd place League finish in 1998 and were runners up in the 2000 Playoffs and 2002 Trophy. In latter years, the club struggled both on and off the court. The club officially resigned from the BBL in the summer of 2006 and soon after went into liquidation. Since then both the Birmingham Panthers and Birmingham Knights have endured short-lived and unsuccessful spells in the BBL. The 1980–81 Rotary Watches National Basketball League season was the ninth season of the National Basketball League. The league was sponsored by Rotary Watches for the third consecutive year and Birmingham Team Fiat broke the Crystal Palace monopoly by taking the league title. Sunderland provided a major shock when securing the Play Offs title. Palace, who were expected to make a clean sweep of silverware, gained some consolation by winning the National Cup. The 1979–80 Rotary Watches National Basketball League season was the eighth season of the National Basketball League. The league was sponsored by Rotary Watches for the second consecutive year and Crystal Palace won an unprecedented treble of League, Playoffs and National Cup. Crystal Palace were helped by Alton Byrd, who would become the best known name in British basketball and pick up the season MVP award. The league was sponsored by Guinness and the number of teams participating remained at ten. The Loughborough team moved to Leicester, while Exeter and Stockport replaced the Avenue and Durham teams.
