Nanterre
Nanterre (; ) is the prefecture of the Hauts-de-Seine department in the western suburbs of Paris, France. It is located some northwest of the centre of Paris. In 2018, the commune had a population of 96,807. The eastern part of Nanterre, bordering the communes of Courbevoie and Puteaux, contains a small part of the La Défense business district of Paris and some of the tallest buildings in the Paris region. Because the headquarters of many major corporations are located in La Défense, the court of Nanterre is well known in the media for the number of high-profile lawsuits and trials that take place in it. The city of Nanterre also includes the Paris West University Nanterre La Défense, one of the largest universities in the Paris region. Killing Of Nahel Merzouk
On 27 June 2023, Nahel Merzouk (25 February 2006 – 27 June 2023), a 17-year-old French people, French youth of Morocco, Moroccan and Algerian descent, was shot at point-blank range and killed by police officer Florian M., when he did not comply with an order to stop and instead attempted to drive away in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, France. Initial reporting on the incident (informed by police statements) was later contradicted by a video posted online, which led to Nahel Merzouk riots, widespread protests and riots. Symbols of the state such as town halls, schools, police stations, and other buildings were attacked. The Interior Ministry (France), Interior Ministry reported that more than 5,000 vehicles had been set on fire, along with 10,000 garbage cans; nearly 1,000 buildings had been burnt, damaged or looted; 250 police stations and gendarmeries had been attacked; and more than 700 police officers had been injured. Nanterre Massacre
The Nanterre massacre was a mass shooting that occurred on 27 March 2002, at the Hôtel de Ville (town hall) in Nanterre, France. Gunman Richard Durn opened fire at the end of a town council meeting, resulting in the deaths of eight councillors and the injury of nineteen others. Durn committed suicide the following day, by leaping from a police station window during questioning. Shooting At approximately 1:11 a.m. ( CEST), at the Hôtel de Ville (town hall), following a meeting of the municipal council chaired by Mayor Jacqueline Fraysse, Richard Durn rose from his seat, removed firearms previously hidden under his jacket, and opened fire. Durn killed eight councilors and injured 19 others; 14 critically, before being overpowered by Gerard Perreau-Bezouille and other councilors. Once overpowered, Durn began shouting, "Kill me!" Hôtel De Ville, Nanterre
The (, ''City Hall'') is a municipal building in Nanterre, Hauts-de-Seine, in the western suburbs of Paris, France, standing on Rue du 8 Mai 1945. History Following the French Revolution, the new town council established its meeting place in one of the towers of the Port de Paris, one of the main gates of the old fortified town, located where Vieux Chemin de Paris (now Rue Sadi-Carnot) and Boulevard du Levant met. There was a prison cell on the ground floor and an office above. In 1839, the town council decided to commission a dedicated town hall. The site they selected was a large disused cemetery on the corner of Rue du Cimetière (now Rue des Anciennes-Mairies) and Rue Saint-Denis (now Rue Waldeck-Rochet). Lutetia
Lutetia, ( , ; ) also known as and ( ; ; ), was a Gallo-Roman culture, Gallo–Roman town and the predecessor of modern-day Paris. Puteaux () is a commune in the western suburbs of Paris, France. It is located in the heart of the Hauts-de-Seine department, from the centre of Paris.
