The goatfishes are ray-finned fish of the family Mullidae, the only family in the suborder Mulloidei of the order Syngnathiformes. The family is also sometimes referred to as the red mullets, which also refers more narrowly to the genus ''Mullus''. The family name and the English common name mullet derived from Latin ''mullus'', the red mullet; other than the red mullet and the striped red mullet or surmullet, the English word "mullet" generally refers to a different family of fish, the Mugilidae or gray mullets.''Oxford English Dictionary''''s.v.'' 'mullet'/ref> Description Goatfish are characterized by two chin barbels (or goatee), which contain chemosensory organs and are used to probe the sand or holes in the reef for food. Red Mullet
The red mullets or surmullets are two species of goatfish, '' Mullus barbatus'' and ''Mullus surmuletus'', found in the Mediterranean Sea, east North Atlantic Ocean, and the Black Sea. Both "red mullet" and "surmullet" can also refer to the Mullidae in general. Classification Though they can easily be distinguished—''M. surmuletus'' has a striped first dorsal fin—their common names overlap in many of the languages of the region. In English, ''M. surmuletus'' is sometimes called the ''striped'' red mullet. Despite the English name "red mullet", these fishes of the goatfish family ''Mullidae'' are not closely related to many other species called " mullet", which are members of the grey mullet family ''Mugilidae''. The word "surmullet" comes from the French, and ultimately probably from a Germanic root "sor" 'reddish brown'. Cultural impact They are both favored delicacies in the Mediterranean, and in antiquity were "one of the most famous and valued fish". They are very si ...

Mugilidae
The mullets or grey mullets are a family (Mugilidae) of ray-finned fish found worldwide in coastal temperate and tropical waters, and some species in fresh water. Mullets have served as an important source of food in Mediterranean Europe since Roman times. In ancient Egypt they ate pickled and dried mullet called fesikh. The family includes about 78 species in 26 genera. Mullets are distinguished by the presence of two separate dorsal fins, small triangular mouths, and the absence of a lateral line organ. They feed on detritus, and most species have unusually muscular stomachs and a complex pharynx to help in digestion. Classification and naming Taxonomically, the family is placed in the order Mugiliformes, which is named after it. Until recently, it was considered the only member of Mugiliformes, but more recent taxonomic treatments suggest that they are closely related to the Asiatic glassfishes (Ambassidae), which are now also placed in the group. The presence of fin ...
