Mount Dora is a city in Lake County, Florida. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee, Florida, metropolitan statistical area. Founded in 1880, Mount Dora is known for its small-town southern charm. It has many antique shops in the downtown area. The downtown area overlooks Lake Dora. Mount Dora is home to one of three freshwater lighthouses in Florida. It hosts many monthly festivals and is known as the "Festival City". As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 16,341. History The town of Mount Dora began in 1874 when the area was settled by David Simpson, his wife, and two children. In 1880, Ross C. Tremain became the town's first postmaster, and later a major real-estate developer for the area. A post office called Mount Dora has been in operation since 1883. State Road 46 (SR 46) is an east–west route in central Florida, running from U.S. Route 441 (US 441) in Mount Dora to US 1 in Mims. Along the way, it crosses the Wekiva River and, further east, the St. Johns River near the Econlockhatchee River. County Road 46 continues west from the western terminus to County Road Old 441 in Mount Dora. Route description State Road 46 begins as Sanford Road at an at-grade intersection with US 441, where it changes from a County Road to a State Road. Tavares (, ) is a city and the county seat of Lake County, Florida. The population at the 2020 census was 19,003, and in 2019 the population was estimated to be 17,749. The Old Mount Dora A. C. L. Railroad Station (also known as the Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce) is a historic Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) depot in Mount Dora, Florida. It is located at 341 North Alexander Street. It was built by ACL in 1915, replacing an earlier depot built in 1895 when the line was part of the Plant System. The station's design, which includes elements of the Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival styles, is similar to other ACL stations of the era. The line was mainly used to ship citrus fruit and other agricultural products, though its passenger trains also brought tourists to the city. Lakeside Inn (Mount Dora, Florida)
The Lakeside Inn is a historic site in Mount Dora, Florida. It is located at 100 North Alexander Street. On March 19, 1987, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It was for sale in 2010, and purchased by new owners, who planned to renovate it, later that year. The Lakeside Inn, originally named the Alexander House, was built in 1883 by the partnership of Col. John M. Alexander, Col. John A. McDonald (real estate dealer from Eustis), and his daughter, Annie McDonald Stone. The partners hired Caroline Bruce to manage the ten-room inn as they were busy with other interests. In 1895, Caroline Bruce left in order to start her own establishment, the Bruce House. Management of the hotel shifted to Emma Boone and it was renamed the Lake House. Boone married George D. Thayer in May of 1903, and Thayer formed a stock company to operate the hotel.
