Motorways In New Zealand
There are currently 428 km of motorways and expressways in New Zealand. 17 km are currently under construction, with a further 162 km expected to be completed by 2034, at which time a total of 605 km of motorway and expressway is expected. ''Expressways'' in New Zealand are high standard all-purpose roads, usually dual carriageway, mainly for through traffic with no restrictions. Intersections may be controlled at-grade with roundabouts or traffic signals, or fully grade separated. Although there are no legal restrictions to pedestrian, cycle and animal traffic (as are applied to motorways,) pedestrian and animal traffic is strongly discouraged. Western Belfast Bypass
The Western Belfast Bypass is an approximately , four lane, grade separated motorway recently built to bypass the northern Christchurch suburb of Belfast, New Zealand. It is estimated that its construction will result in 17,000 fewer vehicles using Main North Road through Belfast, and shorten travel times between the north and west of Christchurch. In addition, the motorway will allow for improved public transport, cycling, and pedestrian options on Main North Road. It is expected that 21,500 vehicles per day will use the WBB motorway by 2026. The speed limit along the route is 100 km/h. The Auckland Harbour Bridge is an eight-lane motorway bridge over Waitematā Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand. It joins Saint Marys Bay, New Zealand, St Marys Bay on the Auckland city side with Northcote, Auckland, Northcote on the North Shore, New Zealand, North Shore side. Central Motorway Junction
The Central Motorway Junction or CMJ (best known as Spaghetti Junction and rarely as Central Motorway Intersection or CMI), is the intersection of State Highways 1 and 16, just south of the central business district of Auckland. A multilevel structure (three traffic levels crossing in several locations), it has been described as a "fiendishly complicated, multi-layered puzzle of concrete, steel and asphalt". Carrying around 200,000 vehicles a day, it is one of the busiest stretches of road in New Zealand. Hawkes Bay Expressway
The Hawke's Bay Expressway, known also as the Napier-Hastings Expressway, runs from Hawke's Bay Airport, through Napier and Hastings, and ends at Pakipaki, just south of Hastings, a total length of 24 km. It is part of State Highway 2 (SH 2). History When the airport at Westshore, Napier, was confirmed as Hawke's Bay's main airport in 1957, Hastings leaders objected, preferring to have an airport closer to their city. The Government set up an Airport Inquiry Committee in 1961 to settle the matter. They confirmed the Napier airport as the best option, and recommended the building of a Napier–Hastings motorway to provide quick access between the airport and Hastings. Te Ahu A Turanga – Manawatū Tararua Highway
The Te Ahu a Turanga–Manawatū Tararua Highway is a , four-lane highway connecting Ashhurst and Woodville over the Ruahine Range following the closure of the Manawatū Gorge road in 2017. Construction began in January 2021 and was officially opened on 7 June 2025. It was opened to traffic on 11 June 2025. History Manawatū Gorge road Previously, traffic travelling from the east and west of the central North Island used the Manawatū Gorge road, first opened in 1872. The road closed in 2004 and 2015, and also from 2011 to 2012 that lasted more than a year. On 24 April 2017, a slip from the Tararua Range cut off the road. Following more slips as workers were trying to fix previous ones, the NZ Transport Agency pulled workers from the area because of safety concerns. It was never reopened. The Christchurch Southern Motorway is the main southern route into and out of Christchurch, New Zealand. The motorway forms part of (SH 1) and (SH 76). The motorway, which heads in a generally south-west direction, is approximately in length. Upper Harbour Motorway
State Highway 18 (SH 18), also known as the Upper Harbour Motorway, is a state highway that runs between the Auckland Northern Motorway (SH 1) on the North Shore and the Northwestern Motorway (SH 16) in West Auckland, New Zealand.
