Modiolus Barbatus
''Modiolus barbatus'', the bearded horse mussel, is a species of "horse mussel", a marine (ocean), marine bivalve mollusc in the family (biology), family Mytilidae, the mussels. The fossil record of this species dates back to the Pliocene (age range: 3.6 to 2.588 million years ago). Description The shell of an adult ''Modiolus barbatus'' can be as long as .A. Lok, S. Acarli, S. Serdar, A. Kose and P. Goulletque GROWTH AND SURVIVAL RATES OF BEARDED HORSE MUSSEL (MODIOLUS BARBATUS LINNE, 1758) IN MERSIN BAY (TURKEY)/ref> The shape is elongated and ovoid or rhomboidal with a curved or obtuse dorsal margin. The outer surface of the shell is dark brown, while the inside of the valves is blue or slightly iridescent gray. These mussles are characterized by a ''periostracum'' with long, stiff, flat bristles. They are attached with strong ''byssus'' to the underground. Distribution and Habitat This species is present from the Mediterranean Sea to the Black Sea, on the southern and wester ...

Modiolus Auriculatus
''Modiolus auriculatus'', the eared horse mussel, is a bivalve mollusc of the family, Mytilidae, which has a natural range in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It has colonised the eastern Mediterranean Sea from the Red Sea by Lessepsian migration via the Suez Canal. Description ''Modiolus auriculatus'' has an equivalve shell with each valve being inequilateral with their beaks being very close to the anterior end. The shell is the typical mussel form with the ligament and dorsal margins distinctly disjunct and the dorsal and ventral margins being parallel; the dorsal margin is concave. The shell has a smooth with growth lines and the covering periostracum is pubescent. The outer surfaces of the shell is olive-brownish or orange-brown and the shell interior is browny-purple. The commonly grow to a shell size of 70mm. Distribution ''Modiolus auriculatus'' occurs naturally in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean from the Red Sea south to South Africa, east to eastern Polynesia, no ...

Ferdinand Von Roemer
Carl Ferdinand von Roemer (5 January 1818 – 14 December 1891), German geologist, had originally been educated for the legal profession at Göttingen, but became interested in geology, and abandoning law in 1840, studied science at the University of Berlin, where he graduated Ph.D. in 1842. Two years later he published his first work, ''Das Rheinische Ubergangsgebirge'' (1844), in which he dealt with the older rocks and fossils. In 1845 he paid a visit to America, and devoted a year and a half to a careful study of the geology of Texas and other Southern states. He published at Bonn in 1849 a general work entitled ''Texas'', while the results of his investigations of the Cretaceous rocks and fossils were published three years later in a treatise, ''Die Kreidebildungen von Texas und ihre organischen Einschlusse'' (1852), which also included a general account of the geology, and gained for him the title Father of the geology of Texas. Subsequently, he published at Breslau ''D ...

George Brettingham Sowerby III
George Brettingham Sowerby III (London, 16 September 1843 – 31 January 1921) was a British conchologist, publisher, and illustrator. He was the eldest son of G. B. Sowerby II. At the age of seventeen or eighteen, he began his career as a conchologist, operating from his father's residence. From October 1897, the business was conducted under the name Sowerby and Fulton. Mr. Sowerby retired in January 1916. He married Miss Rose Wilkie in June 1867, and they had three children: one son and two daughters. He, too, worked (like his father George Brettingham Sowerby II and his grandfather George Brettingham Sowerby I) on the ''Thesaurus Conchyliorium'', a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated work on molluscs. He was colour blind, and thus his daughter did most of the colouring of his engravings. He was a prolific contributor to the scientific literature. He authored numerous papers for various societies and was responsible for the description of around 720 new species of mollus ...

Modiolus Carvalhoi
''Modiolus carvalhoi'' is a species of bivalve mollusk, commonly known as a horsemussel, described by Klappenbach in 1966. It belongs to the genus '' Modiolus'', which includes other species of horsemussels. ''Modiolus carvalhoi'' is part of the family Mytilidae, the mussels.Rios, E. C. (1994) Seashells of Brazil. 2 nd Edition. Editora da FURG, Rio Grande, 368 pp. Distribution It is known to occur in the Indo-Pacific region and along the coast of South America. Physical description Specimens have been recorded with shell lengths around 7 mm. While specific morphological details are limited, as a member of the ''Modiolus'' genus, it likely possesses an elongated shell with a smooth surface, typical of mussels in this group. Ecology and behavior Like other mussels, ''M. carvalhoi'' is a filter feeder, playing a role in maintaining water quality by filtering plankton and suspended particles. It attaches to substrates using byssal thread A byssus () is a bundle of filaments se ...
