Middlesbrough ( ), colloquially known as Boro, is a port town in the Borough of Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. Lying to the south of the River Tees, Middlesbrough forms part of the Teesside built-up area and the Tees Valley. History Monks and lords Middlesbrough started as a Benedictine priory on the south bank of the River Tees, its name possibly derived from it being midway between the holy sites of Durham and Whitby. The earliest recorded form of Middlesbrough's name is "Mydilsburgh". Some believe the name means 'middle fortress', since it was midway between the two religious houses of Durham and Whitby; others state that it is an Old English personal name (''Midele'' or ''Myhailf'') combined with ''burgh'', meaning town. In 686 a monastic cell was consecrated by St Cuthbert at the request of St Hilda, Abbess of Whitby. The cell evolved into Middlesbrough Priory. This is a list of towns in England. Historically, towns were any settlement with a charter, including market towns and ancient boroughs. The process of incorporation was reformed in 1835 and many more places received borough charters, whilst others were lost. All existing boroughs were abolished on 1 April 1974 and Borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status was reformed as a civic honour for local government districts. At the same time a limited number of former boroughs and other settlements became successor parishes, with the right to be known as a town and preserve their charter. Boroughs that did not become successor parishes formed unparished areas, but were able to preserve their charters without a corporate body by appointing charter trustees. Since 1 April 1974 any parish council in England has the right to resolve to call itself a town council and many communities have taken up this right, including areas that preserved continuity with charter trustees. North Ormesby
North Ormesby is a part of Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England. The area has gained the common nickname of Doggy, it is of unknown origin. Population of the now former "North Ormesby and Brambles Farm" ward was 6,268, at the 2011 census, with Brambles Farm being south-east of the area. The area became its own ward in 2015. It is near the River Tees's southern banks, with the A66 road and Teesdale Way (long-distance walking route) passing to the north of the area, the A171 road (Cargo Fleet Lane) to the east, the A1085 road (Longlands Road) to the south with the A172 road and Esk Valley Line to the west. History Its name, as well as those of various streets in the locality, alludes to the support given to the initial construction of North Ormesby, a new town, in the later 19th century by members of the nearby Ormesby-based Pennyman family. Middlesbrough and Thornaby East is a constituency of the House of Commons in the UK Parliament. Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, it was first contested in the 2024 general election and is currently held by Andy McDonald of the Labour Party, who previously held the abolished constituency of Middlesbrough from 2012 to 2024.
