Mestaruussarja (Championship series) was the top division of Finnish football from 1930 to 1989. It was replaced by Veikkausliiga in 1990. In 1930 league format was used for the first time to decide the Finnish champion. Before that (1908-1929) the championship was decided by cup competition. The league was dominated by clubs from Helsinki, Turku and Vyborg. The first champion was HIFK Footboll from Helsinki. In 1935, the four best clubs were from Helsinki; and in 1934 and 1936 the top three clubs also came from Helsinki. From 1908 to 1940, the championship went outside Helsinki on only six occasions. Kuopio was the first inland city to get into the league when Pallotoverit were promoted in 1938. During World War II years the league was sometimes cut short, abandoned or decided with cup competition instead. In 1940s TUL clubs also participated. Toverit Helsinki
Toverit Helsinki ( Finnish ''Helsingin toverit'', 'Comrades of Helsinki') was a sports club in Helsinki, Finland, which was founded in 1916. Its history ended in 1970. The club was founded in 1916 by group of athletes who left NMKY Helsinki. The club was most based in the neighbourhoods of Vallila and Hermanni. Its sports included football, ice hockey, boxing, orienteering and athletics. The club won the Finnish championship in football in 1942, although a regular league type competition could not be played due to the war, and the whole competition consisted of two cup rounds with a total of three matches. After 1942 their success in football faded due to part of the footballers went off to found a new club called Kallion Palloseura. The club won bronze in football in 1934, 1935 and 1939. Kouvoulan Sudet
Sudet (''"Wolves"'' in English) is a sports club from Kouvola, Finland, playing bandy and association football. The club was formed in 1912 and was based firstly in Viipuri (Vyborg), then in Helsinki, before finally moving to Kouvola. Sudet formerly played in the Bandyliiga, the top bandy league in Finland, and has become Finnish champions many times. As of 2014, the club is the reigning national champion in women's bandy. Sudet currently plays football in the Kolmonen (Fourth Division) and their home ground is at the Keskusurheilukenttä, Kouvola. The Club Chairman is Vesa Vainio. History Sudet were originally established in Viipuri (Vyborg) on 13 December 1912 under the name Wiipurin Bandy & Jalkapalloseura (WB & JS). The name was changed in 1924 to Wiipurin Sudet. Turun Palloseura
Turun Palloseura, commonly known as TPS, is a professional association football, football club based in Turku, Finland. Since 2024, the men's team competes in Ykkösliiga, the second highest tier. Nicknamed "''Tepsi''", the club was founded in 1922. TPS have won 8 List of Finnish football champions#Performance by club, League titles and 3 Finnish Cups.
