Megapodagrionidae
The Megapodagrionidae are a family of damselflies, commonly called flatwings for their habit of spreading out the hind wings horizontally when at rest. A 2013 phylogenetic analysis pares down this family into only three genera, and numerous other genera are now placed in different families, including Amanipodagrionidae, Argiolestidae, Heteragrionidae, Hypolestidae, Lestoideidae, Mesagrionidae, Mesopodagrionidae, Philogeniidae, Philosinidae, Protolestidae ''Protolestes'' is a genus of flatwings in the damselfly order Odonata. There are about eight described species in ''Protolestes''. As a result of molecular phylogenetic studies by Bybee et al. in 2021, it is now in its own family, Protolestid ..., Rhipidolestidae, Tatocnemididae, and Thaumatoneuridae. Damselfly
Damselflies are flying insects of the suborder Zygoptera in the order Odonata. They are similar to dragonflies, which constitute the other odonatan suborder, Anisoptera, but are smaller and have slimmer bodies. Most species fold the wings along the body when at rest, unlike dragonflies which hold the wings flat and away from the body. An ancient group, damselflies have existed since at least the Lower Permian, and are found on every continent except Antarctica. All damselflies are predatory insects; both nymphs and adults actively hunt and eat other insects. The nymphs are aquatic, with different species living in a variety of freshwater habitats including acidic bogs, ponds, lakes and rivers. The nymphs moult repeatedly, at the last moult climbing out of the water to undergo metamorphosis. The skin splits down the back, they emerge and inflate their wings and abdomen to gain their adult form. Their presence on a body of water indicates that it is relatively unpolluted, bu ...

Amanipodagrionidae
''Amanipodagrion gilliesi'' is a species of damselfly. Its monotypic genus ''Amanipodagrion'' was formerly in the subfamily Argiolestinae of the flatwing damselfly family (Megapodagrionidae). As a result of molecular phylogenetic studies by Bybee et al. in 2021, it is now in its own family, Amanipodagrionidae.Seth M. Bybee et al. (2021) Phylogeny and classification of Odonata using targeted genomics. Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 160: 1-15 This species is commonly known as the Amani flatwing. It has a slender dark-coloured abdomen with a white tip, and males have a dark wing band. This insect is endemic to a stretch of stream in the Amani-Sigi Forest Reserve in the eastern Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. Because of its small area of occupation and the continuing destruction of the mountain forests in the area, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed the conservation status of the Amani flatwing as being " critically endangered". Philip Powell Calvert
Philip Powell Calvert (January 29, 1871 – August 23, 1961) was an American entomologist, recognised as a leading authority on the Odonata (dragonfly order). A long term teacher and professor at the University of Pennsylvania, he was President of the American Entomological Society 1900-15. His 1893 publication ''Catalogue of the Odonata (dragonflies) of the Vicinity of Philadelphia, with an Introduction to the Study of this Group'' served as a model for regional insect study and was the first major attempt at a guide to the order. Calvert went on to publish over 300 notes and articles on the Odonata. He was married to botanist Amelia Smith Calvert. Odonata Families
Odonata is an order of flying insects that includes the dragonflies and damselflies. Members of the group first appeared during the Triassic, though members of their total group, Odonatoptera, first appeared in Late Carboniferous. The two common groups are distinguished with dragonflies, placed in the suborder Epiprocta, usually being larger, with eyes together and wings up or out at rest, while damselflies, suborder Zygoptera, are usually smaller with eyes placed apart and wings along body at rest. All Odonata have aquatic larvae called naiads (nymphs), and all of them, larvae and adults, are carnivorous. The adults can land, but rarely walk. Their legs are specialised for catching prey. They are almost entirely insectivorous. Etymology and terminology Fabricius coined the term ''Odonata'' in 1793 from the Ancient Greek ( Ionic form of ) 'tooth'. One hypothesis is that it was because their maxillae are notably toothed. Most insects also have toothed mandibles. The wor ...
