Maryland ( ) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. The Maryland 400 were members of the 1st Maryland Regiment who repeatedly charged a numerically superior British force during the Battle of Long Island during the American Revolutionary War, Revolutionary War, sustaining heavy casualties, but allowing George Washington, General Washington to successfully evacuate the bulk of his troops to Manhattan. This action is commemorated in Maryland's nickname, the "Old Line State." A monument in Brooklyn and multiple plaques were put up in the memory of this regiment and the fallen soldiers. Smith Island Cake
Smith Island is a collection of three distinct island communities – Tylerton, Rhodes Point, and Ewell, Maryland – on the Chesapeake Bay, on the border of Maryland and Virginia territorial waters in the United States. Calico Cat
A calico cat is a domestic cat of any breed with a tri-color coat. The calico cat is most commonly thought of as being 25% to 75% white with large orange and black patches; however, they may have other colors in their patterns. Calico cats are almost exclusively female except under rare genetic conditions. Skipjack (boat)
The skipjack is a traditional fishing boat used on the Chesapeake Bay for Fishing dredge, oyster dredging. It is a sailboat which succeeded the bugeye (boat), bugeye as the chief oystering boat on the bay, and it remains in service due to laws restricting the use of powerboats in the Maryland state oyster fishery. Design and construction The skipjack is sloop-rigged, with a sharply raked mast and extremely long boom (typically the same length as the deck of the boat). The Baltimore oriole (''Icterus galbula'') is a small icterid, icterid blackbird common in eastern North America as a migratory breeding bird. It received its name from the resemblance of the male's colors to those on the Flag of Maryland, coat-of-arms of 17th-century Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, Lord Baltimore. Observations of interbreeding between the Baltimore oriole and the western Bullock's oriole ''Icterus bullockii'', led to both being classified as a single species, called the northern oriole, from 1973 to 1995. Hoye-Crest
Hoye-Crest is a summit along Backbone Mountain just inside of Garrett County, Maryland. It is the highest natural point in Maryland at an elevation of . The location, named for Captain Charles E. Hoye (1876–1951), founder of the Garrett County Historical Society, offers a view of the North Branch Potomac River valley to the east. The Maryland Historical Society placed a historical marker at the summit during a dedication ceremony in September 1952. Accessing Hoye-Crest There is no vehicular access to Hoye-Crest. The best route by foot is a hike along the Maryland High Point Trail, from a point along U.S. Route 219 just south of Silver Lake, West Virginia at .
