Marmaray
Marmaray () is a commuter rail line located in Istanbul, Turkey. The line runs from Halkalı, on the European side, to Gebze, on the Asian side, along the north shore of the Sea of Marmara. Mostly using the right-of-way of two existing commuter rail lines, the Marmaray line linked the two lines via a tunnel under the Bosporus strait, becoming the first standard gauge rail connection between Europe and Asia (all prior connections ran through Russia and used the incompatible Russian broad gauge). The two existing sections of the line were rebuilt and expanded from two tracks to three tracks, to allow for higher capacity with intercity and freight rail. The name ''Marmaray'' is a portmanteau of the words ''Marmara'' and ''Ray'', which is Turkish for ''rail''. Marmaray Tunnel
The Marmaray Tunnel () is a long undersea railway tunnel in Istanbul, Turkey, beneath the Bosporus strait, linking Kazlıçeşme, Zeytinburnu, Kazlıçeşme, Zeytinburnu in Europe with Ayrılıkçeşmesi, Kadıköy, Ayrılıkçeşmesi in Asia. The tunnel consists of two single track (rail), single track tunnels with three underground railway stations: Yenikapı Transfer Center#Marmaray platform, Yenikapı, Sirkeci railway station#Marmaray platform, Sirkeci and Üsküdar railway station, Üsküdar. The Marmaray Tunnel was opened to passenger traffic on 29 October 2013. In March 2019 the overground part of the Marmaray project were completed and normal train traffic, including commuter (entire line), YHT and Rail freight transport, freight services started to run through the tunnel. Yüksek Hızlı Tren
Yüksek Hızlı Tren or YHT () is a high-speed rail service operated by TCDD Transport in Turkey. Branded as "YHT", they are TCDD Transport's flagship passenger train service and the only high-speed rail service in the country. As of 2025, the network spans and serves major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, Eskişehir, İzmit, Konya, and Sivas. Expansion of the system is underway and the network is expected to reach Edirne, Afyonkarahisar, Adana, and İzmir in the 2020s. High-speed rail in Turkey was originally planned to be built as early as 1975, but it wasn't until 2003 that the construction of the Ankara-Istanbul high-speed railway began. Turkish State Railways
The State Railways of the Republic of Turkey (), abbreviated as TCDD, is a government-owned national railway company responsible for the ownership and maintenance of railways in Turkey, as well as the planning and construction of new lines. TCDD was formed on 4 June 1929 as part of the nationalisation of railways in Turkey. The Turkish State Railways owns and maintains all public railways in Turkey. TCDD E32000
The TCDD E32000 is an electric multiple unit railway car built by Hyundai-Rotem for the Turkish State Railways. They were ordered exclusively to operate along the Marmaray commuter rail network in Istanbul with delivery beginning in 2011. The EMUs consist of 5-car and 10-car sets respectively. The first EMUs went into service along Istanbul's two commuter rail lines from 2012 and 2013. Istanbul Suburban
The Istanbul suburban railway, locally referred to as B1 (), was an important rail line in Istanbul, Turkey. It was operated by the Turkish State Railways and was one of Istanbul's two commuter rail lines (the other being the Haydarpaşa suburban). Carrying an average of 22,200 passengers daily, it was the second-busiest commuter railway in Turkey, after the Haydarpaşa suburban. The Istanbul Commuter Railway is a historical line, being the first rail line to be electrified and being the first commuter railway in Turkey. Halkalı Railway Station
Halkalı station () is the westernmost station on the Marmaray line as well as in Istanbul. The station also services regional trains to Edirne, Uzunköprü, Çerkezköy and international trains to Sofia. Gebze Railway Station
Gebze station () is a station on the Istanbul-Ankara railway in Gebze, Turkey. It is located between Plevne and Etem Paşa Avenues just southwest of Gebze's city center. It was the eastern terminus of the Haydarpaşa suburban commuter service until 2013 and in 2019 became the eastern terminus of the new Marmaray commuter rail line. Gebze was opened in 1873 as part of the Constantinople-Izmit railway, built by the Ottoman government. The Anatolian Railway (CFOA) took over the line in 1880 and continued to build further east from Izmit.
