Marietta is a town in Crawford County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 510 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated community of Easter Rock is located in the town. The unincorporated community of Boydtown is located partially in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 48.0 square miles (124.4 km2), of which, 47.0 square miles (121.8 km2) is land and 1.0 square miles (2.7 km2) (2.14%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 510 people, 197 households, and 141 families residing in the town. The population density was 10.8 people per square mile (4.2/km2). Marietta de Patras (died 12 April 1503) was the Greek mistress of King John II of Cyprus and the mother of his illegitimate son King James II of Cyprus. Shortly after King John's marriage to Helena Palaiologina, the new Queen ordered that Marietta's nose be cut off. Following the death of her son, she was taken to Venice where she was kept in semi-captivity. King's mistress Marietta was born on an unknown date in Patras, Greece. It is not known when she arrived in Cyprus, however, she became the mistress of King John II of Cyprus before 1438. The ''Chronicle'' of Florio Bustron describes her as having been "very beautiful and prudent". Together King John and Marietta had one son, King James II of Cyprus (1439/1440- 10 July 1473), who reigned in 1463-1473. Marietta Stanley Case (, Stanley; August 22, 1845 – 21 July 1900) was a 19th-century American poet and temperance advocate. Her very best poems were entitled, "The Waning Century" and "Amorpatioe", the latter being written for the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), as well as "Amor Patriæ", written for her alma mater. She was one of the Connecticut women authors given creditable mention at the Cotton States and International Exposition (Atlanta, 1895). Marietta Canty (September 30, 1905 – July 9, 1986) was an American actress, community activist and recipient of numerous humanitarian awards. Early days Canty was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the daughter of Mary and Henry Canty, who attended the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and actively canvassed for the Republican Party. Acting career Canty first appeared on Broadway in 1933. She also appeared in 40 films between 1940 and 1955, mostly in supporting roles and bit parts. Like many African-American actresses of her generation, she often played family maids. Marietta Bones (May 4, 1842 – July 11, 1901) was an American woman suffragist, social reformer, and philanthropist. In 1881 Bones was elected vice-president of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) and annually re-elected for nine years. In 1890 suffragist Susan B. Anthony and supporters of the movement merged the National Women Suffrage Association into the National American Women Suffrage Association (NAWSA). In 1882, Bones made her first appearance as a public speaker in Webster, soon to be Webster, South Dakota, where she later resided. She was an active temperance worker, and was secretary of the first Non-Partisan National Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1889.
