Marchionesses Of Montferrat
The Marchioness and Duchesses of Montferrat were the consorts of the rulers of a territory in Piedmont south of the Po River, Po and east of Turin called Montferrat. The March of Montferrat was created by Berengar II of Italy in 950 during a redistribution of power in the northwest of his kingdom. It was originally named after and held by the Aleramici. In 1574, Montferrat was raised to a Duchy by Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor (see Duchy of Montferrat). Margrave was originally the medieval title for the military commander assigned to maintain the defence of one of the border provinces of the Holy Roman Empire or a kingdom. That position became hereditary in certain feudal families in the Empire and the title came to be borne by rulers of some Imperial principalities until the abolition of the Empire in 1806 (e.g., Margrave of Brandenburg, Margrave of Baden). Aleramo, Marquess Of Montferrat
Aleram (; died 991) was the first Marquis of Montferrat and Liguria (the '' marca Aleramica'') in Northern Italy until his death. He was son of William I of Montferrat and is mentioned in documents for the first time in 933 when he received a fief near Vercelli by Hugh of Italy. In 955 he was invested of lands in what is now the province of Alessandria. Life In 958 he was appointed as Marquis by Berengar II of Italy, whose daughter Gerberga he had married. Three years later, however, Aleram sided for emperor Otto I, who gave him further lands in the Langhe and from the Tanaro, the Orba and the Ligurian Sea. The new grants had been favoured by Adelaide of Burgundy, wife of Otto I from 951 and previous wife of Lothair II, and also daughter of Rudolph II of Burgundy. William IV, Marquess Of Montferrat
William IV (c. 1030 – 1100) was the fifth Marquis of Montferrat from 1084. The date of William's birth is unknown, but it most likely took place between 1030 and 1035. He was the eldest son of Otto II and Constance of Savoy. Life He first appears in a document of 1059, when he is placed in power over the city of Savona, probably as per a request of the citizenry for a ruler of their own. Otto II (also ''Otho'', ''Ottone'', or ''Oddone'') (c. 1015 – 20 November 1084) was the fourth Marquis of Montferrat from 1042 until his death. He was a member of the Aleramid dynasty. Life Otto was the son and successor of William III and Waza. After his father's death in 1042, Otto ruled the March of Montferrat alongside his younger brother, Henry of Montferrat until Henry's death, c.1045. The Arduinici were a noble Frankish family that immigrated to Italy in the early tenth century, possibly from Neustria. They were descended from and take their name after one Arduin (Hardouin). The first of the Arduinici to enter Italy was Roger, son of Arduin, who was established as count (''comes'') at Auriate in the early tenth century. He extended his power and was succeeded by his son Arduin Glaber, named after his grandfather, who established the family as one of the most powerful in northwestern Italy. He conquered the Susa Valley and allied with Provence against the Muslim Andalusian outpost of Fraxinetum. Adelaide of Susa (also ''Adelheid'', ''Adelais'', or ''Adeline''; – 19 December 1091) was the countess of part of the March of Ivrea and the Marchioness of Turin in Northwestern Italy from 1034 to her death.
