Lycoming Township is a township in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,490 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Williamsport Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Lycoming Township was formed from part of Old Lycoming Township. A petition from the residents of the northern part of what was Lycoming Township was submitted on April 26, 1858. The petition asked that Lycoming Township be divided into northern and southern portions. A vote held in the Newberry section of Williamsport agreed with the petitioners. A judge decreed that the northern portion be called "Lycoming Township" and the southern part be named "Old Lycoming Township" on December 2, 1858. The dividing line begins where Beautys Run flows into Lycoming Creek and follows a line of southwestward to Woodward and Anthony townships. Lycoming Mall was a shopping mall located twelve miles east of Williamsport, Pennsylvania off Route 220 and I-180. It was anchored by Burlington. History 1978–2015 Plans for Lycoming Mall were announced in 1975, with 674,000 sq. ft. of space and Gee Bee, Hess's, and Sears as anchors. Hess's would open on March 1, 1978, with the rest of the mall opening July 15, 1978, and Sears a few weeks later. Plans included a $4.7 million expansion in 1985 that added 115,800 sq. ft. and a Bon-Ton to the mall. J. C. Penney moved from downtown Williamsport to the mall in the late 1980s. During this time, an independent attempt to build a second area mall in downtown failed. Value City would close in March 2008, with Burlington Coat Factory announced as its replacement in May. Lycoming College is a Private college, private Liberal arts colleges in the United States, liberal arts college in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1812, Lycoming College is affiliated with the United Methodist Church but operates as an independent institution. Through its history, it has been an academy, seminary, junior college, and four-year college. History Lycoming College traces its roots to 1812 and the founding of the "Williamsport Academy" for the Education of Youth in English and other languages, in the useful arts, science and literature". Old Lycoming Township is a township in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,973 at the 2020 census up from 4,938 in 2010. It is part of the Williamsport Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Old Lycoming Township is a township in Lycoming County that is actually older than the county. It was formed as part of Northumberland County on August 22, 1785, ten years before the formation of Lycoming County. The original boundaries of the township encompassed much of the territory that was previously governed by the Fair Play Men. The land between Lycoming and Pine creeks was outside of the legal boundaries of Pennsylvania until 1784 and the second Treaty of Fort Stanwix. The Fair Play Men operated a system of self-government from 1773 to 1785. Their claims to the land had no legal bearing in the state of Pennsylvania when it was finally legally part of the state.
