Lugano ( , , ; ) is a city and municipality within the Lugano District in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. It is the largest city in both Ticino and the Italian-speaking region of southern Switzerland. Lugano has a population () of , and an urban agglomeration of over 150,000. It is the List of cities in Switzerland, ninth largest Swiss city. The city lies on Lake Lugano, at its largest width, and, together with the adjacent town of Paradiso, Switzerland, Paradiso, occupies the entire bay of Lugano. Geography The Lugano District has an area, , of . Of this area, or 15.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 66.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 15.3% is settled (buildings or roads), or 0.7% is either rivers or lakes and or 4.6% is unproductive land. History Grancia is first mentioned in 1309 as ''in loco Grancie''. Until 1825 it was part of the municipality of Carabbia. Arogno is a municipality in the district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino, located south of Lake Lugano in the southernmost tip of Switzerland. History Arogno has been inhabited since late antiquity, because of its strategic location along the transit route between Seprio and Isola Comacina. During the Langobardian era, Arogno expanded into a major fortified garrison. In 859 the monastery of S. Ambrogio in Milan was listed as the owner of property in Arogno.
