Ludza Municipality
Ludza Municipality (, ) is a municipality in Latgale, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by Merger (politics), merging Briģi Parish, Cirma Parish, Isnauda Parish, Istra Parish, Nirza Parish, Ņukši Parish, Pilda Parish, Pureņi Parish, Rundēni Parish and Ludza town, the administrative centre being Ludza. During the Administrative divisions of Latvia, 2021 Latvian administrative reform, the previous municipality was merged with Cibla Municipality, Kārsava Municipality and Zilupe Municipality. The new municipality now fully corresponds with the area of the former Ludza district. The municipality is located 267 km from the capital of Latvia - Riga, by the Latvian-Russian border, i.e. by the border of the European Union with the Russian Federation. The territory of the municipality is crossed by the internationally important Riga-Moscow road and by the Riga-Moscow railway. Administrative Divisions Of Latvia
The current administrative division of Latvia came into force on 1 July 2021. On 10 June 2020, the Saeima approved a municipal reform that would reduce the 110 municipalities and nine republic cities to 43 local government units consisting of 36 municipalities (, ''novads'') and seven state cities (''valstspilsētas, valstspilsēta''). The municipalities are also further divided into 71 cities/towns (''pilsētas'', '' pilsēta'') and 512 parishes (''pagasti, pagasts''). On 1 June 2021, the Constitutional Court of Latvia ruled that the annexation of Varakļāni Municipality to Rēzekne Municipality was unconstitutional. In response, the Saeima decided to preserve the existence of Varakļāni Municipality as a 43rd local government unit until 2025. Ludza Dialect
The Ludza dialect or Lutsi () is a dialect of South Estonian that was spoken in Latvia by the Ludza Estonians near the town of Ludza in Latvia. Ludza is the most similar to the Seto dialect of South Estonian. The Ludza dialect has historically been on a decline and is now extinct. It was estimated that around 800 people spoke Ludza in 1894, and by 1936 this number had decreased to only around 30 to 40 people. The last native speaker of the Ludza dialect was Nikolājs Nikonovs, who was from the village of Lielie Tjapši. He died in 2006, but some people still have limited knowledge of the dialect. The last knowledgeable language user with passive knowledge, Antonīna Nikonova, died later in 2014. History The origin of the Ludza people is a mystery, and there are many theories about it. Zilupe Municipality
Zilupe Municipality () is a former municipality in the historical region of Latgale, and the Latgale Planning Region in Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2002 by merging Zaļesje Parish and Zilupe. In 2009 it absorbed Lauderi Parish and Pasiene Parish, the administrative centre being Zilupe. Zilupe, Lauderi, Zaļesje and Pasiene are among the towns and villages located in the municipality. The population as of 2020 was 2,575. On 1 July 2021, Zilupe Municipality ceased to exist and its territory was merged into Ludza Municipality. Cibla Municipality () is a former municipality in Latgale, Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2000 by merging Cibla parish and Līdumnieki parish. In 2009 it absorbed Blonti parish, Pušmucova parish and Zvirgzdene parish the administrative centre being Blonti. As of 2020, the population was 2,355. On 1 July 2021, Cibla Municipality ceased to exist and its territory was merged into Ludza Municipality. Rundēni Parish
Rundēni or Rundāni is a village in Rundēni Parish, Ludza Municipality in the Latgale region of Latvia. It is the center of Rundēni Parish. In the village converge roads from six villages Zirgi, Kaunata, Lauderi, Vecsloboda, Raypole and Sapožņiki. History Rundēni got its name from latgalian words 'creek' and 'hot water'.
