1946 Los Angeles Dons Season
The All-America_Football_Conference#1946, 1946 Los Angeles Dons season was the inaugural season of the Los Angeles Dons in the All-America Football Conference. Led by head coach Dudley DeGroot, the Dons finished 7–5–2, third in the West division, and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The team's statistical leaders included quarterback Charlie O'Rourke with 1,250 passing yards, John Kimbrough with 473 rushing yards, Dale Gentry with 341 receiving yards, and Joe Aguirre with 55 points scored (31 extra points, four field goals, and two touchdowns). On September 13, 1946, in the first game in team history, the Dons defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers, 20-14, before a crowd of 18,995 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers (AAFC) Season
The 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers season was the first season for the Brooklyn Dodgers football team and also the inaugural season of the All-America Football Conference. The team compiled a 3–10–1 record. In October 1945, team co-owners William D. Cox and Gerald Smith announced that the new Brooklyn football team would play its home games at Ebbets Field and that they had signed Mal Stevens as head coach and Glenn Dobbs and Bill Daley to play in the backfield. Stevens resigned as the Dodgers head coach in October 1946 after the team posted a 1–4–1 record in its first six games. Assistant coach Tom Scott took over on an interim basis after Stevens' resignation. Cliff Battles was hired as the new head coach on November 1, 1946. Dudley Sargent DeGroot (November 10, 1899 – May 5, 1970) was an American athlete and coach, primarily of American football. He served as the head coach for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL) from 1944 and 1945, tallying a mark of 14–5–1; his winning percentage of .737 is the best in franchise history for coaches with at least one full season. Don Ameche (; born Dominic Felix Amici; May 31, 1908 – December 6, 1993) was an American actor, comedian and vaudevillian. After playing in college shows, repertory theatre, and vaudeville, he became a major radio star in the early 1930s, which led to the offer of a movie contract from 20th Century Fox in 1935.
