Loriciel Games
Loriciel (also sometimes Loriciels) was a French video game developing company that was active from 1983 to the early 1990s. The name is a combination of ''logiciel'', the French word for software, and ''Oric'' which was the first computer they wrote software for. During the 1980s, they developed games for various systems (Oric 1, ZX81, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Thomson computers and the Atari ST). The first game that Loriciel developed was ''Hubert'' for the Commodore 64. They managed to publish 150 different games within their short lifespan as a company. While several attempts were made to revive the company (first as Loriciel then Virtual Studio), financial difficulties would force this company to shut down after developing '' Tommy Moe's Winter Extreme: Skiing & Snowboarding'' for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. ''The Brainies'' is a puzzle game released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System console and Atari ST, Amiga, Apple IIgs, Macintosh, and Amstrad CPC computers. Even though its European title is ''Tiny Skweeks'', the connection to the popular ''Skweek'' series was made late. Gameplay The gameplay revolves around Mexican jumping beans (referred to in game as ''Brainies'') as they navigate 101 levels to solve the puzzles that are in their way. A time limit is in effect; running out of time means losing a life. Players can only control the direction in which a Brainy will walk; taking care not to bump into another Brainy or an obstacle. There are four difficulty levels and the object is to return the Mexican jumping beans safely home. Items can be picked up; they may be beneficial or detrimental to the Brainy depending on certain factors. ''Super Skweek'' is a puzzle game developed and published by the French company Loriciel. The game was released on multiple platforms in the early 1990s as a follow-up to 1989's ''Skweek'' (released as ''Slider'' in 1991 in the United States). Gameplay The player plays the Super Skweek, an orange-furred creature of unknown origin. Under the command of the King, the player has to move over blue tiles in order to repaint them pink, fighting off the monster invasion in doing so. There are five islands, each consisting of 50 levels. Some levels contain various monsters roaming around, and certain special tiles such as slippery tiles, explosive tiles, floating tiles and tiles which move the player in a certain direction. It is one of the longest-running game shows in the world, and the inspiration for ''Countdown'' on Britain's Channel 4.
