Long Family
The Long family is a family of politicians from the United States. Many have characterized it as a political dynasty. After Huey Long's 1935 assassination, a family dynasty emerged: his brother Earl Long, Earl was elected lieutenant-governor in 1936, and governor in 1948 and 1956. Long's widow, Rose McConnell Long, was appointed to replace him in the Senate, and his son Russell B. Long, was a U.S. senator from 1948 to 1987. As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Russell shaped the nation's tax laws. He was an advocate of low business taxes, but also passed the Earned Income Credit and other tax legislation beneficial to the poor. In addition to Long's brother Earl K. Long becoming governor, brother Julius Long was a Winn Parish District Attorney, and brother George S. Long was elected to Congress in 1952. Gerald Long (born July 9, 1944) is an American politician. He served as a Republican member for the 31st district of the Louisiana State Senate. Long was born in Winnfield, Louisiana. The Louisiana State Senate (; ) is the upper house of Louisiana’s legislature. Senators serve four-year terms and participate in various committees. Composition The Louisiana State Senate has 39 members elected from single-member districts. Candidates must be registered voters, at least 18 years old, residents of their district for one year, and Louisiana residents for two years. Senate elections use a nonpartisan primary system with runoffs if needed. Elections to the Senate occur every four years and senators are limited to three four-year terms (12 years). Louisiana Public Service Commission
The Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) is an independent regulatory agency which manages public utilities and motor carriers in Louisiana. The Commission is established by Article IV, Section 21 of the 1921 Constitution of the State of Louisiana. It succeeded the Railroad Commission of Louisiana that was created by the 1898 Constitution. The commission has five elected members chosen in single-member districts for staggered six-year terms. Samuel Bason
Samuel Murphey Bason (December 3, 1894 – January 15, 1986) was an American politician. He served as a Democratic member for the 15th district of the North Carolina Senate. Bason was born in Swepsonville, North Carolina, the son of Flora Murphey and William Henry Bason. He attended Burlington High School, Oak Ridge Military Academy and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the United States Army during World War I. In 1947, he won the election for the 15th district of the North Carolina Senate, and served for the 15th district until 1959. He worked as a banker in Yanceyville, North Carolina and was an elder of the Yanceyville Presbyterian Church. Blanche Long
Blanche Beulah Revere Long ( Revere; December 17, 1902 – May 11, 1998) was the first lady of the state of Louisiana, serving three nonconsecutive terms. Raised in New Orleans, she married Earl Long in 1932 and was active in his successful bids for lieutenant governor and governor of Louisiana. She was the first lady of Louisiana from 1939 to 1940, 1948–1952, and 1956–1960. In 1959, after Earl's increasingly erratic behavior including a highly publicized affair with stripper Blaze Starr, Blanche attempted to have him involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital, but failed when he used the governor's authority to dismiss the hospital's administrator. After Earl's death in 1960, Blanche Long remained active in Louisiana politics.
