Lokeren () is a City status in Belgium, city and Municipalities in Belgium, municipality located in the Belgian Provinces of Belgium, province of East Flanders, and belongs to the Waasland, also called ''Land van Waas'', of which it is the second most important city after Sint-Niklaas. The city, located on the river Durme, the Lede, and the European route E17, E17 motorway, has more than 42,100 inhabitants who are called Lokeraars or Rapenfretters. Because Lokeren is located on the Durme, Lokeren is often called "The Durme City". Lokerse paardenworst, Horse sausages are officially recognized as a regional product. Toponym A group of authors see the element ''luken'' in the place name, which means (en)close or to close, to shut. Lokeren would refer to an enclosed place between the Durme and a forest area with wild animals. Waasland
The Waasland (, archaically "Waesland") or Land van Waas () is a historic region in northern Belgium. It is part of the Belgian province of East Flanders. The other borders are with the Scheldt and Durme rivers (east and south) and, to the north, the border with the Dutch region of Zeelandic Flanders. The (informal) capital and major city of the region is Sint-Niklaas. Waas most likely refers to the soggy soil of the region although the exact etymology is unknown. One possibility is a connection to the English word "wasteland". The swamps that characterized it have long been drained although many fields are still noticeably convex; the result of many years of plowing the topsoil towards the center to improve drainage. Lokerse Paardenworst
The Lokerse paardenworst (''Lokeren horse sausage'') is a regional product from the Belgian city of Lokeren. The dish consists of minced horse sausage in a sauce of tomato purée or peeled tomatoes, onion and celery, herbs (bay leaf, pepper and salt), butter or oil. The Lokerse horse sausage was recognized in 2007 as a Flemish regional product by the Flemish Center for Agro- and Fisheries Marketing ( VLAM). At present, the aim is to obtain European recognition as a regional product. History More than a hundred years ago, horse sausage was a nutritious meal in lean times. Horse meat could be afforded by anyone, as it came from worn-out horses from farms, the Antwerp harbor and coal mines, and was mixed with imported meat from the United States. Filip Anthuenis (born 1965) is a Belgian politician and a member of the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats. He was elected as a member of the Belgian Senate in 2007.
