Llanbedr
Llanbedr () is a village and Community (Wales), community south of Harlech. Administratively, it lies in the Ardudwy area, formerly Meirionnydd, of the county of Gwynedd, Wales. In 2011 the community had a population of 645. History Ancient monuments at Llanbedr include Neolithic standing stones; the Stones of Llanbedr and Bronze Age hut circles. The village originally grew around the Slate industry in Wales, slate quarrying industry. Glyn Pedr is a Victorian Grade II listed residence on Maes Ffynnon. During the First World War, Marian Antonia Gamwell, a widow, created a British Red Cross auxiliary hospital at her new home, the country house called Aber Artro, at Llanbedr. Climate Church and chapel The church of St Peter, after whom the village is named (Pedr being the Welsh for Peter), is a Grade II* listed building. Llanbedr Airport
Llanbedr Airfield (), formerly RAF Llanbedr (ICAO: EGOD), is an operational general aviation aerodrome located in the Snowdonia National Park near the village of Llanbedr, Gwynedd, northwest Wales. History It opened in 1941 as part of RAF Fighter Command's 12 Group. Shell Island (Wales)
Mochras (also known in English as Shell Island) is a peninsula lying west of Llanbedr in Gwynedd, Wales. The peninsula was formed after the River Artro was diverted by the Earl of Winchilsea in 1819 from its previous course where it entered the sea to the south of Mochras. Prior to this, access to the ancient settlement on the 'island' would have been through the village of Llandanwg, which is now across the estuary. Mochras is known for the wide variety of seashells that wash up on the beach, and for its wild flowers. It is said to have been connected to the mythical Cantre'r Gwaelod. The peninsula lies within the Snowdonia National Park. From the end of October to the following March local farmers bring their sheep from the lowlands to graze on the 'island'. Dwyfor Meirionnydd (UK Parliament Constituency)
Dwyfor Meirionnydd is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (at Westminster), represented since 2015 by Liz Saville Roberts of Plaid Cymru. Like its predecessors, it is a Plaid Cymru stronghold, with their candidate in 2024 achieving a majority of 39.3%. Until 2024, the seat shared the same boundaries with the Dwyfor Meirionnydd Welsh Assembly constituency, the latter of which still uses the borders established for the 2007 Welsh Assembly election. Sydney Curnow Vosper
Sydney Curnow Vosper RWS, RWA (29 October 1866 – 10 July 1942) was an English painter and etcher of landscapes and figure subjects. His later work has a close association with Wales and Brittany. His most famous work is '' Salem'' (1908), which shows an old woman in the Welsh national costume, with Welsh hat and shawl, attending a service at Salem Baptist Chapel, Pentre Gwynfryn. Personal history Vosper was born in Stonehouse, Plymouth, in 1866 to Samuel, a brewer, and Eleanor Vosper. He attend a school in Somerset and Plymouth College. Following this he spent three years as an architect's apprentice before beginning his artistic career as an illustrator in London. He would later leave to study for three years at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, studying under Raphaël Collin. Pentre Gwynfryn
Pentre Gwynfryn is a village in the Ardudwy area of Gwynedd, Wales, about east of Llanbedr. The village is at the confluence of the River Artro and the River Cwmnantcol. The inside of the village's chapel (Capel Salem) was made famous by the painter Sydney Curnow Vosper, whose 1908 work '' Salem'' features a member of the congregation, Siân Owen, in traditional Welsh costume. The folds around the left arm of her richly rembroidered cloak are supposed to form the face of the devil, who has taken over the proud woman. A more obvious devil's face is seen peering in through the window. Harlech
Harlech () is a seaside resort and community (Wales), community in Gwynedd, North Wales, and formerly in the Historic counties of Wales, historic county of Merionethshire. It lies on Tremadog Bay in the Snowdonia National Park. Before 1966, it belonged to the Meirionydd District of the 1974 County of Gwynedd. Its landmark Harlech Castle was begun in 1283 by Edward I of England, captured by Owain Glyndŵr, and in the 1480s, a stronghold of Henry VII of England, Henry Tudor. Morfa Dyffryn
Morfa Dyffryn beach is on the west coast of Wales, between Barmouth and Harlech in Gwynedd. This sandy beach is several miles long and is chiefly known for having an officially recognised naturist area, in length. The beach is very clean and is also known for regular sightings of dolphins. The nearest settlements are the villages of Dyffryn Ardudwy and Llanbedr where several camp and caravan sites and guest-houses are available. Naturism at Morfa Dyffryn Naturism has been practised at Morfa Dyffryn since the mid 1930s.The beach can attract several hundred naturists in summer during fine weather - despite which, it is rarely crowded. Ardudwy
Ardudwy () is an area of Gwynedd in north-west Wales, lying between Tremadog Bay and the Rhinogydd. Administratively, under the old Kingdom of Gwynedd, it was first a division of the sub kingdom (cantref) of Dunoding and later a commote in its own right.
