Lisgar (electoral District)
Lisgar was a federal electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Manitoba, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1871 to 1988. This riding was created following the admission of Manitoba into the Canadian Confederation in 1870. It was abolished in 1987 when it was redistributed into Portage—Interlake, Brandon—Souris, Lisgar—Marquette and Provencher ridings. Lisgar Collegiate Institute
Lisgar Collegiate Institute is an Ottawa-Carleton District School Board secondary school in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The school is located in downtown Ottawa by the Rideau Canal. History In 1843, a grammar school with 40 paying students was opened in the Sandy Hill area of Ottawa in a house at the corner of Waller Street and Daly Avenue. In 1859, the school became one of the first in Ontario to admit girls. The school changed locations several times in the first few years, and was renamed first Bytown Grammar School and later Ottawa Grammar School. In 1871 the school was raised to a high school and in 1873 to a collegiate institute, becoming Ottawa Collegiate Institute. The school found a permanent home in 1873 when a lot at what was then the southern edge of the city was purchased. The school board acquired the land on Biddy Street for Canadian dollar, $3,200 and paid a squatter $100 to give up any claims on the land. Lisgar, Ontario
Lisgar is a residential neighbourhood in the city of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It is located in the extreme northwestern corner of the city, bordering the larger Meadowvale district to the east and the Churchill Meadows neighbourhood to the south. It is named after the former hamlet located at the corner of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Derry Road, which is actually outside the present neighbourhood in Meadowvale. History The hamlet of Lisgar was settled in the early nineteenth century and was later named in honour of the 1st Baron Lisgar, the Governor General of Canada from 1869 until 1872. Prior to this, however, it was known as Switzer's Corners, after Samuel Switzer, who owned much of the land that the small hamlet was built on. By 1824, a schoolhouse, church, and graveyard had been established. The community would go on to construct an inn, general store, post office, and blacksmith shop. Lisgar GO Station
Lisgar GO Station is a railway station on GO Transit's Milton line in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It opened for service on September 4, 2007. The station is located at Argentia Road and Tenth Line, near the interchange of Highway 401, and Highway 407. It is named after the Lisgar neighbourhood in which it is located, which is itself named after Lord Lisgar, second Governor General of Canada from 1869–1872. The station was built to alleviate the congested Meadowvale GO Station and to provide better service for the local community. The station provides parking spaces for 788 vehicles. Construction began on new canopies, walkways, and shelters in August 2014 and was completed in early 2015. In spring 2009, a 50 kW wind turbine was constructed at the station and was expected to supply up to 80% of the station's power. Centretown
Centretown is a neighbourhood in Somerset Ward, in central Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is defined by the city as "the area bounded on the north by Gloucester Street and Lisgar Street, on the east by the Rideau Canal, on the south by the Queensway freeway and on the west by Bronson Avenue." Traditionally it was all of Ottawa west of the Rideau Canal, while Lower Town was everything to the east. For certain purposes, such as the census and real estate listings, the Golden Triangle and/or Downtown Ottawa (between Gloucester/Lisgar and the Ottawa River) is included in Centretown and it is considered part of Centretown by the Centretown Citizens Community Association as well as being used in this way in casual conversation. John Young, 1st Baron Lisgar
John Young, 1st Baron Lisgar (31 August 1807 – 6 October 1876), known from 1848 to 1870 as Sir John Young, Young baronets, 2nd Baronet, was a British diplomat and politician who served as the second governor general of Canada from 1869 to 1872. He previously served as the 12th governor of New South Wales, from 1861 to 1867, and as Chief Secretary for Ireland, from 1853 to 1855. Biography Young was born into an Anglo-Irish family in Bombay, India, eldest son of Sir William Young, 1st Baronet, of Bailieborough Castle, Sir William Young, 1st Baronetage of the United Kingdom, Baronet of Bailieborough Castle, who was a director of the East India Company. He was educated at Eton College, Eton and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, graduating in 1829 and was called to the bar in 1834. He married Adelaide Annabella Tuite Dalton in 1835.
