North Karelia (or ''Northern Karelia'', ; ) is a region in eastern Finland. It borders the regions of Kainuu, North Savo, South Savo and South Karelia, as well as Russia's Republic of Karelia. Mätäsvaara
Mätäsvaara is a small village in Finland in the town of Lieksa, North Karelia. It is located on the east side of the lake Pielinen and between the town of Nurmes 27 kilometres from the centre of Lieksa. The village was the site of significant mining activities in the 20th century. The mining focused on a molybdenum deposit, with mining beginning in 1903. The mining remained small-scale until World War II. As molybdenum alloys could be used to create high-quality steel, there was a great deal of demand for molybdenum to build weapons of war. In 1939 and 1940, the mine was built up, eventually becoming the second-largest in Finland. The Mätäsvaara mine supplied much of the molybdenum used by Nazi Germany for its wartime steel demands. At its peak, more than one thousand people lived in the village. The mine closed after the war, in 1947, and the village shrunk with it. Mira Jalosuo
Mira Jalosuo (born 3 February 1989) is a Finnish ice hockey player and head coach for the St. Cloud State women's ice hockey team. She previously served as an assistant coach to the Minnesota Frost of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). As a member of the Finnish national team, she won a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and five bronze medals at the IIHF World Women's Championships. Jalosuo attended the University of Minnesota and played NCAA Division I ice hockey with the Minnesota Golden Gophers from 2009 until her graduation in 2013. Eino Ilmari "Illu" Juutilainen (21 February 1914 – 21 February 1999) was a fighter pilot of the ''Ilmavoimat'' ( Finnish Air Force), and the top scoring non-German fighter pilot of all time. The top flying ace of the Finnish Air Force, he led all Finnish pilots in score against Soviet aircraft in World War II (1939–40 and 1941–44), with 94 confirmed aerial combat victories (he himself claimed further kills for a total of 126 victories, but these were unconfirmed) in 437 sorties. is a town and municipality of Finland, located in the county of North Karelia. The town has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . Heino Kaski
Heino Wilhelm Daniel Kaski (21 June 1885 – 20 September 1957) was a Finnish composer, teacher and piano, pianist. Life Kaski was born in Lieksa, Pielisjärvi into a Cantor (church), cantor's family. His father taught him the violin, and was generally supportive: when Kaski dropped out of secondary school to study music full-time in Helsinki, he did not object. Kaski first studied at the Helsinki Cantor-Organist school, then entered the Philharmonic's Orchestra School. There, he continued studying the violin, but was also tutored in theory (by Ilmari Krohn) and composition (by Erkki Melartin). In 1911, on Jean Sibelius's recommendation, Kaski received a grant that enabled him to study for four years in Berlin, under Paul Juon.
