This article is about libraries in Dallas, Texas ( USA). Dallas Public Library The city of Dallas is served by the Dallas Public Library system. The system was originally created by the Dallas Federation of Women's Clubs with efforts spearheaded by then-president Mrs. Henry (May Dickson) Exall. Her work in raising money led to a grant from philanthropist and steel baron Andrew Carnegie, which enabled the construction of the first branch in 1901. Today the library operates 25 branch locations throughout the city including the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library, the eight-story main branch in the Government District of downtown. Dallas () is the third largest city in Texas and the largest city in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the United States at 7.5 million people. Lakewood is a neighborhood in East Dallas, Texas ( USA). It is adjacent to White Rock Lake and Northeast of Downtown Dallas. Lakewood is bound by Mockingbird Lane to the north, Abrams Road to the west, Gaston Avenue to the south, and White Rock Lake to the east. About Lakewood has the historic Lakewood Theater, which used to show classic films and host contemporary musical and comedy events. South Dallas is an area in Dallas, Texas. It is south of Downtown Dallas, bordered by Trinity River on the west, Interstate 30 on the north, and the Great Trinity Forest to the south and east. In recent years the City of Dallas and organizations including Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together Dallas have begun revitalizing the area in an effort to make the area more attractive to homeowners and foster economic development. Highland Hills is a neighborhood in the southern sector of Dallas, Texas. The neighborhood is centered on the intersection of Bonnie View and Simpson Stuart roads. Approximately 78% of the neighborhood is African American, 18% is Hispanic, 2% is white, and 2% are multiracial. Education The neighborhood is served by the Dallas Independent School District (DISD). The portion of the neighborhood south of Simpson Stuart Road was served by the Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District until July 1, 2006, when the district was dissolved, and the schools absorbed into DISD. Oak Cliff is a neighborhood of Dallas, Texas, that was formerly a separate town in Dallas County; Dallas annexed Oak Cliff in 1901. It has since retained a distinct neighborhood identity as one of Dallas' older established neighborhoods. Oak Cliff has turn-of-the-20th century and mid-20th century housing, many parks, and is near the central business district of downtown Dallas. The boundaries of Oak Cliff are roughly Interstate 30 on the north, Loop 12 on the west, Interstate 35 on the east, the Trinity River on the northeast and Interstate 20 on the south.
