Leverkusen
Leverkusen () is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on the eastern bank of the Rhine. To the south, Leverkusen borders the city of Cologne, and to the north the state capital, Düsseldorf. The city is part of the Rhine-Ruhr Metropolitan Region, one of Europe's largest urban areas. With about 163,000 inhabitants, Leverkusen is one of the state's smaller cities. The city is known for the pharmaceutical company Bayer and its sports club Bayer Leverkusen. History The heart of what is now Leverkusen was Wiesdorf, a village on the Rhine, which dates back to the 12th century. With the surrounding villages which have now been incorporated, the area also includes the rivers Wupper and Dhünn, and has suffered a lot from flooding, notably in 1571 and 1657, the latter resulting in Wiesdorf being moved East from the river to its present location. BayArena () is a Association football, football stadium in Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, which has been the home ground of Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen since 1958. History The stadium was originally known as ''Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion'' (; ), named after a former chairman of Bayer, Bayer AG, the club's founders. Its original capacity was 20,000. In 1986, a rebuilding project began to convert it into a modern facility; the project continued over the following decade and was completed in 1997, creating a modern all-seater stadium with a capacity of 22,500. 2021 Leverkusen Explosion
An explosion occurred at Chempark, an industrial park for chemical factories in Leverkusen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on 27 July 2021, at 09:35 local time, sending a pall of smoke over the city. The city of Leverkusen stated that the explosion, which caused a fire, occurred in storage tanks for solvents. Chempark is an industrial park for the chemical industry in Germany. Carl Leverkus
Carl Leverkus (5 November 1804 – 4 February 1889) was a German chemist and chemistry entrepreneur. The city of Leverkusen is named after him. Education Leverkus started training as a pharmacist in 1822, and then studied at the University of Marburg. Following a stint as an assistant pharmacist in Trier, he went to Paris, where he worked at a pharmacy and studied chemistry at the Sorbonne in the evenings. In 1829, he took the apothecary examinations in Berlin. He earned his doctorate in 1830 from the University of Giessen with a dissertation on the chemistry of silver, which was reviewed by Justus von Liebig. The Morsbroich Museum () or Morsbroich Castle Municipal Museum (''Städtisches Museum Schloss Morsbroich'') is a German museum of modern art situated in Leverkusen, 20 km north of Cologne. Dhünn
Dhünn is a -long river located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its main source is near Wipperfürth in the Bergisches Land area. It runs in a south-westerly direction, and its mouth into the river Wupper is near Leverkusen, appr. north of Cologne. Renaturation By diverting the river bed of the Dhünn around the 'Sensenhammer' weir in April 2010, it was declared the first 'barrier-free river' in North Rhine-Westphalia. This means that the -long stretch of the river from the mouth into the Wupper to the 'Großen Dhünn' dam is accessible without obstacles for fish and microbes.
