Linanthus
''Linanthus'' is a genus of annual and perennial plants in the phlox family Polemoniaceae. The species are found in western North America and in Chile, with the greatest diversity in California. The stems are erect, with multiple branches arising directly from the base, and grow 2–15 cm tall. The leaves are stem-like (''cauline'') and opposite, with shapes ranging from entire to palmately lobed, the 3-9 lobes being linear to lanceolate or spatulate. Flowers have a tubular calyx, and the corolla may be funnel- or bell-shaped, or . The genus name is from the Greek for "flax flower", since the flowers superficially resemble those of flax. The genus has recently been split, with many of the species formerly included now transferred to the genus ''Leptosiphon'' ( Jepson Manual). ''Leptosiphon nuttallii'' is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family known by the common name Nuttall's linanthus. It is native to much of western North America, including the Western United States from California to New Mexico and Montana, and Northwestern Mexico. It is known from many types of habitat. It is native to the Klamath Mountains, Northern California Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada in Northern California; and the Inyo Mountains, Peninsular Ranges, Transverse Ranges, and White Mountains in Southern California. ''Leptosiphon aureus'' (a.k.a. ''Leptosiphon chrysanthus'') is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family known by the common name golden linanthus. Description Golden linanthus is an annual herb producing a thin, threadlike stem with occasional leaves divided into narrow needlelike lobes. The oppositely arranged leaves are each divided into very narrow bristlelike lobes up to a centimeter long. The tip of the stem has an inflorescence of usually a single flower with corolla lobes under a centimeter long. The nominate subspecies generally has bright to golden yellow flowers, while ssp. ''Leptosiphon androsaceus'' ( syn. ''Linanthus androsaceus'') is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family known by the common name of false babystars. It is an annual herb that is endemic to California. Distribution and habitat The plant is endemic to California, primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area, and also in the California Coast Ranges of northern and central California, the Southern Sierra Nevada, and the Peninsular Ranges and Transverse Ranges of southern California.
