A legislature (, ) is a deliberative assembly with the legal authority to make laws for a political entity such as a country, nation or city on behalf of the people therein. They are often contrasted with the executive and judicial powers of government. Legislatures can exist at different levels of government–national, state/provincial/regional, local, even supranational (such as the European Parliament). The National Assembly (; ) is the lower house of the Parliament of Chad. Deputies of the National Assembly are elected for a five-year term. Legislative history Colonial Chad had four assemblies from 1947 to 1959. They were the Representative Council (1947) and the Territorial and Legislative Assemblies of 1952, 1957 and 1959. The Representative Council from 1947 to 1952 had 30 members elected for five years. It had administrative and financial powers. It included white French and African councillors.
