Leeds Rhinos
The Leeds Rhinos are a professional rugby league club in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The club play their home games at Headingley Rugby Stadium, AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium and compete in the Super League, the top tier of British rugby league system, British rugby league. Leeds Rhinos have won the List of British rugby league champions, League Championship 11 times, Challenge Cup 14 times and World Club Challenge three times. The club share big long-standing West Yorkshire Derby rivalries with Huddersfield Giants and Bradford Bulls. Leeds' traditional home colours are blue and amber shirts with white shorts and blue socks. History 1870–1895: Foundation and early years In 1864, H. I. Headingley Rugby Stadium
Headingley Rugby Stadium (known as AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium due to sponsorship) is a rugby league stadium in Headingley, Leeds and shares the same site as Headingley Cricket Ground. It is the home ground of the Leeds Rhinos, and is the fifth largest rugby league stadium in England. History 1889–1980s: Construction and development Leeds St Johns, who were later to become Leeds Rugby League Football Club then Leeds Rhinos, moved to Headingley in 1889 and built Headingley stadium. Leeds were founder members of the Northern Union in 1895 and Headingley hosted rugby league's first ever Challenge Cup Final in 1897. In the 1930s, major developments took place on two sides of the rugby ground. The South Stand was completed in 1931, with some of the work being carried out by club players, while the old wooden North Stand was burned down during a match against Halifax on 25 March 1932. Super League XX
The Super League XX, known as the First Utility Super League XX for sponsorship reasons, was the 2015 season of Super League. Twelve teams competed over 23 rounds, including the Magic Weekend, after which the eight highest entered the play-offs for a place in the Grand Final. The four lowest teams entered the Super League Qualifying Play-off, along with the four highest Championship teams, to decide which will play in Super League XXI. Leeds Rhinos became only the 3rd team to complete the Treble after defeating Wigan Warriors 22-20 in front of a new record attendance of 73,512 at Old Trafford to win their 7th Super League title. 1999 Challenge Cup
The 1999 Challenge Cup, known as the Silk Cut Challenge Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the 98th staging of the Challenge Cup, a European rugby league cup competition. The competition ended with the final on 1 May 1999, which was played at Wembley Stadium, and was the last year the cup final was played there before the stadium was closed for redevelopment. The tournament was won by Leeds Rhinos, who beat London Broncos 52–16 in the final, and was the club's first major silverware since 1978. The Lance Todd Trophy was won by Leroy Rivett, who had become the first player to score four tries in a Challenge Cup final. 1977–78 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1977–78 Northern Rugby Football League season was the 83rd season of rugby league football. Sixteen English clubs competed for the Northern Rugby Football League Championship with Widnes claiming the title by finishing the season on top of the League. Season summary In June 1977, the International Rugby League Board imposed a four-year ban on international transfers. The ban was primarily put in place as a response to the growing number of English players being recruited by Australian clubs. The League champions were Widnes for the first time. Bradford Northern's last game was cancelled as Featherstone Rovers were on strike, consequently Bradford Northern finished 2nd on percentages. Hull FC, New Hunslet, Bramley and Dewsbury were demoted to the Second Division. 1976–77 Northern Rugby Football League Season
The 1976–77 Northern Rugby Football League season was the 82nd season of Rugby league, rugby league football. Sixteen English clubs competed for the Rugby Football League Championship, Championship, with Featherstone Rovers claiming the title. Season summary In July 1976, the Rugby League Council imposed a ban on players moving to Australian clubs on short term contracts unless a transfer fee was paid. In April 1977, the League's executive committee recommended as of next season that points difference should be used to determine league position for teams level on points, instead of points average.
