This article contains a sortable table listing all major lakes of Switzerland. The table includes all still body of water, water bodies located either entirely or partly in Switzerland, both natural and artificial, that have a surface area of at least , regardless of water volume, maximum depth or other metric. Lake Maggiore
Lake Maggiore (, ; ; ; ; literally 'greater lake') or Verbano (; ) is a large lake located on the south side of the Alps. It is the second largest lake in Italy and the largest in southern Switzerland. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino. Located halfway between Lake Orta and Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore extends for about between Locarno and Arona. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, producing Mediterranean vegetation, with many gardens growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Borromean and Brissago Islands, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia Botanical Garden above Stresa. The ''Società Navigazione del Lago di Lugano'' or Lake Lugano Navigation Company (SNL) is a Switzerland, Swiss company operating passenger services on Lake Lugano. The company also operates bus routes in the same area, and is based at Cassarate in the city of Lugano. It was formerly known as the ''Società di Navigazione e Ferrovie per lago di Lugano'' and at one time also operated railways in the area. The passenger boats of the SNL principally provide services for tourist purposes, but they also connect Lugano with other lake-side communities, in both Switzerland and Italy, some of which have no road access. The bus services connect Lugano with Gandria and Campione d'Italia, both of which are also served by boat services. SNL is a member of the Arcobaleno (tariff), arcobaleno tariff network, but only accepts arcobaleno tickets on its bus services and not on boat services. The ''Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees'' or Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (commonly abbreviated to SGV) is a public Switzerland, Swiss company operating passenger ships and boats on Lake Lucerne. The company is based in the Lucerne, city of Lucerne, and its origins can be traced back to 1836. Today it is the largest inland shipping company in Switzerland, and is notable for operating a number of historic paddle steamers, in addition to more modern motor vessels. The company provides public transport routes to 32 places along the shore of the lake, with interchange to both main line and mountain railways at various points. The or Lake Geneva General Navigation Company (commonly abbreviated to CGN) is a public Swiss company operating ships on Lake Geneva connecting towns in both France and Switzerland including Geneva, , , , and . History The CGN was formed in 1873 through the merger between three companies, bringing together the vessels 'Helvétie', 'Léman', 'Aigle' and later the 'Flèche' in a single fleet. The growth of tourism corresponded with the construction of railways during the second half of the 19th century, leading the CGN to cater for tourists as well as local traffic. The cessation of tourism during World War I severely affected the CGN. Similarly affected during World War II, the company had to cease all operations for three months during 1940. The Adige is the second-longest river in Italy, after the Po. The Po ( , ) is the longest river in Italy. It flows eastward across northern Italy, starting from the Cottian Alps.
