Kreis Walk
Valka county (; , ) was a historic county in the Governorate of Livonia, and in the Republic of Latvia dissolved during the administrative territorial reform of the Latvian SSR in 1949. Its capital was Valka (''Walk''). History The county of Valka was created during the administrative territorial reform of the Governorate of Riga in 1783 by merging of parishes from the preexisting Kreis Riga and Kreis Wenden. After the establishment of the Republic of Latvia in 1918, the ''Valkas apriņķis'' existed until 1949, when the Council of Ministers of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic, Latvian SSR split it into the newly created districts (''rajons'') of Valka district, Valka and Smiltene district, Smiltene (dissolved in 1959). Demographics At the time of the Russian Empire Census of 1897, Kreis Walk had a population of 120,585. Uezd
An uezd (also spelled uyezd or uiezd; rus, уе́зд ( pre-1918: уѣздъ), p=ʊˈjest), or povit in a Ukrainian context () was a type of administrative subdivision of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, the Tsardom of Russia, the Russian Empire, the Russian SFSR, and the early Soviet Union, which was in use from the 13th century. For most of Russian history, uezds were a second-level administrative division. By sense, but not by etymology, ''uezd'' approximately corresponds to the English "county". General description Originally describing groups of several volosts, they formed around the most important cities. Uezds were ruled by the appointees (''namestniki'') of a knyaz and, starting from the 17th century, by voyevodas. In 1708, an administrative reform was carried out by Peter the Great, dividing Russia into governorates.
