Kidston, Queensland
Kidston is a ghost town within the rural locality of Einasleigh, Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia. What remains of the built structure of the town is heritage-listed as the Kidston State Battery & Township. History Oak's Rush was a gold mining area. A small amount of gold was found there by Charles Mack who then teamed up with Charles Hawkins and together found more substantial quantities of gold in September 1907. Kidston State Battery & Township
Kidston State Battery is a heritage-listed stamper battery at Kidston in Einasleigh, Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1907 to 1950. It is also known as Kidston Township. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Payable gold was discovered on the Copperfield River in September 1907, leading to the Oaks Rush, as the field was initially known. It was declared the Oaks Goldfield in April 1908 and had a peak population of 1,700 by June 1908. A township developed on the west bank of the Copperfield River. The mining warden noted in August 1908 that tents were being replaced by wood and iron buildings. By the dry season of 1909, the population had fallen dramatically to about 100 alluvial miners using dry blowers, but reefers had started work on the quartz veins. W. Brown's Pioneer mill of five head was erected in May 1909 and W. Suhle and Archbold's large Enterprise mill of five stamps was transferred from Georg ...

Kidston Gold Mine
Kidston Gold Mine is a former open cut gold mine in northern Queensland, Australia. Gold was first discovered around 1907 at what was initially known as ''Oak's Rush'' and renamed to Kidston a few months later as a gold rush started. The gold was initially alluvial gold found in gullies leading to the Copperfield River. The township was established soon after. As the easily-won alluvial gold began to run out, miners started to pursue gold in the quartz reefs. The first stamper battery commenced operation in May 1909 and a second commenced in April 1910. Kidston Dam was built on Butcher's Creel in 1915 by the government to provide a reliable water supply to the town and mining operations. The government battery commenced operations in May 1922 using more modern equipment than the private batteries. It operated intermittently up until 1942, rarely at full capacity. It ceased operation for the remainder of World War II, and recommenced operation in 1947, but its last operation w ...

Kidston Solar Project
Kidston Solar Project is a photovoltaic solar power station built on top of the former Kidston Gold Mine utilising the tailings storage facility in northern Queensland, Australia. The project consists of two solar farms, KS1 and KS2. The Kidston Solar Project is the first of four projects that comprise the Kidston Clean Energy Hub also occupying this area. The Kidston Solar Project generates up to 145 Gigawatt hours of renewable electricity per year. In total, there are 540,000 panels that makes up the project, manufactured by company First Solar Inc on a single axis tracking system. The photovoltaic panels are mounted on the tracking system which shifts the angle of the panels to follow the sun. Financial close was reached in February 2017 for KS1, with first energisation occurring in November 2017. It is now fully commissioned and operational, connected to the existing 132 kV transmission line powered by Ergon Energy and generating electricity into the NEM. Construction ...

Kidston Island
Kidston Island, a 35-acre sliver of real estate providing protection for Baddeck harbour which lies within has had quite a storied past. It became the first white settlement in what eventually would become Baddeck when a retired British naval officer from Halifax by the name of James Duffus took up occupancy there in 1819. It and the area around it consisted entirely of virgin woodland. The only inhabitants  in the vicinity were the native people who called the area "Ebedeck", loosely translated to mean "place with an island nearby". By the time Duffus arrived on the scene the island was known as ‘Leg-a-Mutton’ (for its shape) by the British who had controlled Cape Breton Island since the defeat of the French at Louisbourg. In common parlance the name had been shortened to ‘Mutton Island’. The story of James Duffus is of itself quite a romantic tale with just a simple overview provided within the scope of this paper. Duffus immediately went about establishing a home a ...
